Alexander Graham Bell was a strong supporter of Maria Montessori and her methods of education and views on raising children. He and his wife, Mabel, sponsored one of the first Montessori schools in America, which was opened in their own home in Washington, D.C. in 1912. They served as president for the Montessori Educational Association, as well.

There was a Glass Classroom at the Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. 30 children aged 2.5-6 yrs. (with no previous school experience) attended a glass-walled Montessori classroom during the 4-month world's fair allowing visitors to observe the children using Montessori materials.
