All mosquitos begin in the Egg Cycle, mosquito eggs are laid either singly or together in a raft-like structure that floats on water.
-
The mosquito first goes through its hatching or First Larval stage, which occurs in the water.
-
In this stage, the larva grows from the 1st stage, and remains floating on the surface of the water.
-
During this stage, the mosquito larva grows & continues to shed its exoskeleton.
-
This stage is the fourth and final stage in the larval process, the mosquito begins to look more like it will at full growth.
-
After the larvae have completed their fourth instar stage they become pupae. This is the stage in which they undergo metamorphosis to become an adult mosquito. The process is similar to a caterpillar becoming a butterfly.
-
After one to three days the adult mosquito is ready to emerge. The pupal skin splits along the top of the case. The adult mosquito slowly and carefully works its way out of the pupal case. After emerging it will float on the surface of the water and rest there until its body and wings harden. Once the body has hardened the mosquito will fly off to begin its new life.
