    Phase 1: North Korean Success

    NK troops made heavy advances. They took Seoul. Allied troops were confined to SE of perimeter, near Pusan

    Phase 2: UN success

    A two-sided counter attack took place. Troops broke through the perimeter and headed northwards, more took part in a daring seaborne attack 200mi behind enemy lines. Seoul was liberated and NK troops sent across the border. The UN troops had finished their mission

    Phase 3: Attempted Korean Reunification

    UN troops continued across border line, trying to get a "unified, independent and democratic government" for all. Very little resistance was encountered. Pyongyang captured on 19 Oct, just over a month later Americans reached the Northern border

    Phase 4: Chinese Counter-Attack

    Scared of US invasion, the Chinese launched a counterattack in late November. UN forces driven backwards by sheer number of troops (although they had far superior equipment), over the 38th Parallel. Bitter winter leads to heavy losses on both sides. Seoul recaptured in 1951. Border line stabilised at the 37th Parallel

    Phase 5: UN Retaliation

    UN troops forced Communists back to 38th Parallel. Seoul recaptured by Allies? in March for the last time. General MacArthur replaced with General Ridgway after disobeying orders and arguing to use nuclear weapons against China/ expand the war needlessly.

    Phase 6: Stalemate / Armistice

    Negotiations at Panmunjom last for two years. Fighting continues across a well established frontier. Little territory changes, but significant loss of life occurs. Chinese soldiers come so quickly the "american guns jam". The armistice is signed and the war ends
