The Era of Good Feelings
After the War of 1812 the Federalists Party was completely destroyed. The 1816 presidential election was the last one when the Federalists' ran a candidate. He lost by a lot. Although this period has often been called the Era of Good Feelings due to its one-party dominance, in fact, Democratic-Republicans were deeply divided internally and a new political system was about to be created from the old Republican-Federalist competition that had been known as the First Party System. -
Missouri Compromise
Congress wanted to balance power between free states and slave states. This was a law that didn't allow the Louisiana Territory to have slavery, except Missouri. -
Election of John Quincy Adams
Nobody ran as a Federalists for the first time. Jackson was going against him and he got 99 Electoral College votes and Adams got 84 votes. Although Jackson looked like a winner, Adams got 43 percent of popular vote and Jackson got 30 percent. It was a very close run. -

Cherokee Capital of New Echota Founded
New Echota was the site of the first Indian language newspaper office, a court case that carried to the U.S. Supreme Cour. One of the earliest experiments in National Government by an Indian tribe, the signing of a treaty that relinquished Cherokee claims to lands east of the Mississippi River, and the assembly of Indians for removal west on the Trail of Tears. -
Erie Canal
the canal links the waters of Lake Erie in the west to the Hudson River in the east. An engineering marvel when it was built, some called it the Eighth Wonder of the World. It was in New York. -
Cherokee Constitution Written
A Constitution that is very much Americas Constitution. Except, this listed the Cherokee's own laws and branches. -
Jackson
The election of Andrew Jackson was one of the most significant elections ever in American history. Campaigning started and the animal emblems or mascots were made. Jackson won the election. -
Sequoya
Sequoya writes Cherokee language. He was the first person to write Cherokee language. -
America's First Gold Rush
Gold is discovered on the Cherokee Nation, which triggered America's first gold rush. This took place in Georgia and as many as 15,000 miners took place at this event. -
Nullify
Georgia nullifies all Cherokee laws. They distributed all Cherokee land to white land owners. -
Trail of Tears
President Jackson had a great hate for Indians since he had a battle with them that he won. Jackson sent the Indians to walk hundreds of miles acroos the Mississippi River to "Indian Territory." -
Indian Removal Act
This act authorized the president to grant unsettled lands west of the Mississippi River in exchange for Indian lands within existing state borders. This was very unfair to the Indians. -
Verses
Cherokee Nation are fighting for their rights in Georgia, verses the white people. Cherokee went to court because of how hateful and inhumane the laws were to the Cherokee's. The United States Supreme Court ruled that the Cherokee Nation was a dependent nation with the United States. -
Veto
President Jackson vetoes the second National Bank of America. He then used his executive power to remove all federal funds from the bank, it was referred to as the "Bank War." -
Election of Martin Van Buren
Martin Van Buren became very good friends with Jackson. So, Jackson chose him as his chosen successor. -
Sectionalism
The emergence of Sectionalism was a huge deal. A new series for the United States Capitol Historical Society, one that will focus on issues that led to the secession crisis and the Civil War.
