The History of the Ford Mustang

  • the first Mustang

    the 1964 1/2 ford mustang was orignially the only projected to have less than 100,000 united for the first year but in its first 18 months more than one million were built. Mustangs produced in the first 6 months were named the 1/2 mustangs.
  • 1965

    Ford debuted a simple sports car. also produced was the Shelby GT-350. The shelby had no back seat and was only availble in white and was race ready.
  • 1966 model

    the gauge cluster was redone to se[erate the mustang from it's falcon roots. also replaced a two barrel with a four barrel. The shelby 350 was availble and also on the shelby was a upgrade of the paxton supercharger which boosts horse power by 40%
  • 1967

    changes made included builkier sheetmetal below the bettline, more aggressive grille, concave tail pannel and a full fastback roofline.
  • the 1968 version

  • 1969

    the 1969 mustang was restyled gaining 3.8 inches in length, and 140 pounds curb weight.
    In 1969 circle tracks were reserved for all the boss series of mustangts which were built to qualify the 429 v8 for NASCAR
  • 1970

    same style at the 1969 with a few changes such as 2 7' head lights instead of 4
  • 1971

    the "Big Mustang" entered the market. Lower, longer and heavier. adding a one inch longer wheelbase. remained were the pure mustang features.
  • 1972

    for the first time in history the mustangs front grille remained unchanged. Woodgrain trim, vinyl finished seats and one touch convertible roof control options became avaible for a hard top and sportsroof models.
  • 1973

    New federal guidelines resulted in mandatory bumpers.
  • 1974

    the New "Mustang 2" light, sporty, and more european. its goals were to be known as "a little jewlel" and thus it was powered by a new 2.3 liter 4-cyclinder engine of a 2.5 liter v6
  • 1978

    the finial year of the Mustang 2. Ford decieded a totally new mustang was needed. Tops on mustangs 1978 menu were the king cobra fastback option at 1,277 dollars. During its five year run 1,107,718 Mustang 2's were born.
  • 1979

    the new mustang was 4.1 inches longer with a 4.2 inch longer wheelbase weighed nearly 200 pounds less. it was availanle in ether a two door coupe or a three door hatchback model. well as upgraded trim and apperance ghia trim.
  • 1980

    Minor changes in styling but for the first time halogen headlights, p-metric radial tired and a maintenance free battery were available.
  • 1981

    2.8 liter V6 was dropped
  • 1982

    "The boss is back!" advertiments were out and exciting. now identified as the mustang GT making it's long awaited return after 13 years replacing the cobra and ghia.
  • 1983

    convertible returned! also recived was a new grille and tail lights. The 3.3 I6 was dropped and replaced with the new 3.8 liter V6 rated at 112 bhp.
  • 1984

    the 20th anniversary of the mustang! special twentieth anniversary Gt featured a GT350 badge. Unforunately the GT350 and the GT500 names were not licensed. ford had to discontinue using the GT350 name making this a one year only model.
  • 1993

    Realed from 3 limited edition mustangs! a few were the yellow L X 5.0 L convertible with white interior and a white on white convertible.
  • 1994

    all new body based on the old fox platform, wheel base grew from .8 inches to 101.3 inches
  • 1995

    ford tighted the reins on the Cobra R availble in Cystal white.
  • 1997-1999

    engine lineup reprised same power plants including the 3.8 liter, Ison p EFI v-6
  • 2000

    the V-6 and GT were indiscernible from the outside. Ford realeased 3,091 spring featured 2000 model mustang. Offered in preformance red, black, silver, white, and zinc yellow.
  • 2001

    cobra returned, special "Bullitt" edition mustang gt coupe was designed to evoke memories of the 1968 mustang driven by steve mcqueen in the 1968 film. the "bullitt" was a hit and all 5,000 sould out!
  • 2002

    offered visteon mach 1000 audio system. no special edition mustangs were availble.
  • 2003

    more powerful cobra and a new limited edition of the march 1 model. ford celebrated it's 100th year anniversary in june of 2003 and made limited edition vehicles to commemorate this great event. the centennial package was also offered for a 995 dollar upgrade.
  • 2004

    unchangable and availble in 5 models some being the GTcoupe, convertible, and the March 1st coupe. In commenerance of the 40th anniversary all models except for the SVT included the fender badges. Upgrade packs availble is deluxe equipment group and premium equipment group.
  • 2005

    completly resdeigned. all new D2 platform exterior styling and drawing inspiration from the 1960's models. the car featured an aesthetic refered to as "retro-futurism"
  • 2006

    This year offered the new Pony package for the V6 models which included upgraded suspenson, "bullitt" syle wheels, wider tires, unique grille treatment with road lamps, rear deck spoiler, special door tripping and special pony emblems
