    Polish craftsmen who had been brought to the Jamestown colony to work were not allowed to vote for the leader of the colony, leading to a strike.

    Nicholas Cugnot built the first self propelled vehicle to drive French heavy guns to the battlefield.

    The Federal Society of Journeymen Cordwainers is formed, shaping Philidelphia's market for shoes and improving jobs for shoemakers.

    Westward Expantion

    The US rapidly expanded westward, according to "Manifest Destiny." Many States were formed during this time, and technology rapidly changed as many had to adapt to different conditions.
  • Faraday's Law is discovered and the first DC generator is built.

    Michal Faraday discovers a principle involving magnetic generators. "An electromagnetic force is generated in an electrical conductor which circles a magnetic flux." He also invented the Faraday Disk, the very first electric generator.

    After the Mexican-American war there was debate as to wether or not the states would be admitted as slave states. In this compromise, a line was drawn depicting the sides where slavery was legal and illegal.

    National Labor Union is formed
    The National Labor Union, led by William H. Sylvis, is formed in 1866. It paved the way for future organizations. Disolved in 1873. They made changes through Legislative reform rather than Collective Bargaining. This means they pressured Congress to make changes. Unfortunatly the group was unsuccessful in many of it's pressuring points, and didn't last long. However, the group did highten awareness of problems with Labor and perhaps inspired people to join future unions.

    Knights of Labor is formed
    Knights of Labor is formed and picks up speed after the fall of the National Labor Union. One of the largest Unions with Membership over 700,000, the Knights had many other clandestine Unions merge with them. With the spread across multiple states and across many trades, organization became a problem which never went away and contributed to their downfall. The Union did include both sexes and even blacks, stating that Union was their goal for all who Labor, brain and brawn.

    The American Federation of Labor is founded.
    The American Federation of Labor is founded in 1886 and led by Samuel Gompers. Many members who joined and aided in the creation of the AFL were members of the broken Knights of Labor. Only Skilled workers were allowed into the Union, and Racial minorities and women were denied initially. Unlike the Knights of Labor, which shared Samuel Gomper's view in peaceful negotiations and Legislative Reform to further the cause of Workers Rights, the Union itself preferred Strikes.

    Professor Ludwig Prandtl presents an 8 page paper that describes the moleculer movement of air around the wing of an aircraft.

    "I will make a car for the great multitude" -Henry Ford Voted most influential car of the century in 1999, Henry Ford did not make the first Automobile. Instead, he made the automobile something anyone could buy. The first cars were often expensive and an extreme luxury the rich could only have. Henry Ford made the Model T to be affordible to anyone in the middle class, and opened up the gateway for America to have cars.

    WWI and Rapid Advancements in

    WWI started on January 28 with the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, and ended with the formation of the UN and their first meeting on the 10th of January in 1920. During this time, Rapid advancements were made in flight due to a higher demand for more speed, manuverability, and higher altitudes. This led to many improvements in shape, engine design, control, and areodynamics. This also impacted cars, which were used during WWI as troop transports and armored vehicles. Tanks also played a part.

    When the 6th Army defending Paris was short on soldiers, and a German attack was iminent, General Joseph-Simon Gallieni awaited reinfocements. However, with a shortage of vehicles, the General suggested the use of Taxis. These taxis, driven by Cab drivers, were sent back and forth to pick up soldiers and transport them to the front, without headlights.

    The 18th Ammendment prohibits the sale, manufacturing, or drinking of any intoxicating beverages. This starts prohibition, which contributed to a higher crime rate.

    The banning of Intoxicating beverages from being bought, sold, manufactured and drank causes much uproar and contributed to a higher crime rate and more opposition to the government. Prohibition ended with the 21st Ammendment which counteracted the 18th ammendment.
