    On July 26, 2000, The Guardian reported that, "A federal judge in San Francisco yesterday ordered Napster, the internet service that allows the trading of MP3 sound files by linking personal computers, to stop permitting the exchange of copyrighted music owned by major music labels." Five record companies were suing the website for copyright infringement, as the site encourages users to share music they don't own.

    The Creation of Friendster
    Created by Jonathan Abrams and Peter Chin, Friendster wasn't the first social media site, but it was the first to have mainstream success. CBS News states that "the site was built on the premise that people were separated by six degrees. A feature that showed how you were connected to strangers made meeting people less intimidating and highly addictive." Membership declined with the rise of Myspace.

    In June of 2017, Snapchat introduced a feature called Snap Map, which allows you to explore a map of the world and watch stories from across the globe. Snapchat explains that "It's easy to get started — just pinch to zoom out and view the Map! You decide if you want to share your location with friends, or simply keep it to yourself with Ghost Mode." This addition to Snapchat goes to show that social media is making our world feel smaller and smaller.
