  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    Plessy v. Ferguson
    A man born of a mixed race of white and black, Homer A. Plessy was arrested for sitting in a “White’s only” section ,created by a state law in Louisiana a Jim Crow southern community, and sued stating that segregation was unconstitutional and violated amendments of equal treatment under the law. Supreme Court Justices ruled in favor of Louisiana and created a foundation and protection of racial segregation of “equal but separate”, leaving states to decide the equality.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    In Topeka, Kansas the Brown family sued the Board of education for not holding equal accommodations for minorities such as the public school for whites only across the street where the Browns were zoned to but due to race were forced to go to a school miles away. Chief Justice of the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Browns creating a major turning point allowing minorities to have a foundation over turning Plessy v. Ferguson, and allowing the fight towards equality.
  • Murder of Emmett Till

    Murder of Emmett Till
    Emmett Till born in 1941 in the Northern state of Chicago was violently abused and murdered in the south by 2 white men “ defending” false statements of a relative claiming Till, a black boy, committed verbal sexual assault. The significance of this event is an illustration of the horrors brought on by civil inequality and gave reason to the need for equality, also inspiring followers of black rights movement.
  • Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Boycott

    Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Boycott
    Rosa parks, a member of a civil rights group, caused a boycott of public busses due the act of not giving her seat to the “superior race” whites. The significance is this purposeful act caused an entire year of boycott which achieved the desegregation of public transportation, allowing minorities to sit among whites which created a major stepping stone for the civil rights movement by casting public equality.

    Founding of Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and the rise of Martin Luther King Jr
    The purpose of the civil rights group is the organization of non violent protest which was lead by Martin Luther King Jr who inspired civil disobedience in order to achieve equality. The significance is the continence of the civil rights movement and keeping morale up to further the cause.
  • Little Rock Nine and Central High School

    Little Rock Nine and Central High School
    This was an example of the progression of the movement with the desegregation of a high school in Arkansas. Due to the protest from the whites, president Eisenhower sent the military forces which enforced the desegregation and sent a message to other schools to desegregate. The little rock nine represents the 9 African American students who were first desegregated.
  • Greensboro Sit-in

    Greensboro Sit-in
    Was a civil disobedience protest where African American students sat in a segregated luck counter in North Carolina. This is one of the many examples of the non violent protest endorsed by students, this lead to the common idea of equality of public space due to race.
  • Freedom Riders

    Freedom Riders
    Occurring in the south, freedom rides was the attempt of forced desegregation of buses which had negative consequences ,yet raised attention to JFK who ordered for mixed race buses and public transport which is a milestone in the civil rights movement.
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    Lead my Martin Luther King Jr, a march for the representation of the struggles African Americans face. Martin Luther King Jr untied the rally with his I Have A Dream speech and showed the unification of the nation giving reason to the passing of the Civil Rights bill by JFK.
  • Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and Freedom Summer

    Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and Freedom Summer
    Was created by young adults giving them a vital role in the civil rights movement. The freedom summer project was the voting of Blacks in southern states to make a statement of the inequalities given by whites o blacks by denying tights given in the Constitution.

    Civil Rights Act
    Signed by President Johnson which ordained the banning of discrimination due to race ,color ,sex, and religion. This was the equality African Americans fought for, a life without discrimination and now made every anti-black law such as Jim Crow, illegal.

    Assassination of Malcolm X
    Malcolm x was murdered by Thomas Hagen a member of the nation of Islam. The nation of Islam held a vendetta against X for the rejection of their nation. This loss was impactful due to Malcom X's high status and lead role the formation of the Black Panthers.

    Now that African-Americans gained civil rights, to allow the individuals to use their newly given rights without the interference from upset whites. Through the civil rights movement African Americans could have pace in politics with an increasing status.

    Martin Luther King Jr was shot at his hotel in Tennessee by convicted James Earl Ray, a wide known racist who was anti civil rights. Due to the public' s widespread response of anger and loss, legislation felt the needs of civil rights movements.
