At the party

It all starts when the main character, Starr and her causin, Kenya went at a party. Suddenly Starr meets her old childhood friend, named Khalil. In the childhood they were best friends and were always together. But later Starr changed school and got other friends and Starr and Khalil stopped hanging out. However, at the party they talked for a long time, but suddenly they hear a shoot and understand that someone are shooting inside the house. They run through the door to get outside the house.

Khalil's death

They come out from the house, and jump into Khalil's car and drive as fast as they can. After some minutes they are being stopped by a policecar. A police man comes out and says to Khalil and Starr to get out of the car, they both do what he says. Khalil shows him the certificates. After Khalil asks Starr "Are you ok?". Suddenly the police man takes his gun forward in Khalil's direction, Starr stares at Khalil, he stads completely still, without warning the police man began shooting, he is dead

Tell her version

Some days after, Starr was broken inside. Why would a policeman kill a boy that never did something to him? Two days after Khalil was killed, Starr overhears her uncle and her parents talking. Her uncle, Carlos that works as policeman suggest Starr's parents if Starr could tell her version of the accident to the police. Starrs parents are against this, but suddenly Starr comes to take a part in the discussion and says it is ok for her to say her version to the police.

Interrogations with the police

The day comes when Starr is going to tell her version of what happened to the police at the police station. Starr sits next to her mom and in-front of two white policemen. Starr is really nervous, but tells them the story and at the end starr says, "it is no reason for the policeman to do this to us and absolutely not to Khalil. We did not do anything to that man." After having been at the police station Starrs mom asks why she would do this. Starr answers that she wants justice for Khalil.

Starr's family and her dad's store

Starr lives with her family in one of the poorest parts in the country, garden heights. Her dad owns a store in the same neighborhood they live in. Starr and her siblings, Seven and Satino often work there. Seven is just Starr's half brother, they have the same dad. His mom is now together with the richest man in the neighborhood, his name is King and have his own gang, KingLords. However, today it is Starrs turn to work at the store, she does as she usually do and is finished before usual.

Kahlil's funeral

Today it is Kahlil's funeral. It have been said at the news that Khalil sold dope before he was killed. Starr tries to not think about it in the funeral. She is really nervous to see Khalil in the coffin but she goes up to see him anyway. This is not Khalil, it is a doll she can not imagine this is Khalil. Suddenly King and some people from his gang come in and tries to take a bandana at Khalils forehead. All in the church were prostrating. Then King said "Khalil was in my gang, he deserve this"

Williamson Starr

When Starr was 7 years old she started at a new school called Williamson. A school were everyone is white. After Starr saw her best friend Natasha die, her mom insisted that Starr have to went to another school with better environment. Where it is only Starr and her brother Seven that are black. But Starr have still a lot of friends at this school, but try to not talk about her background and where she comes from and lives.

DeVante in truble

It is Starr's turn to work in her dad's store and Starr and her father are sitting in the car, on their way through the store. They do as they normally do. Suddenly a guy comes storming into the store. Starr recognized him immediately, he is DeVante, a young guy in the Kinggang. Starr's dad asks him, "what is it?" Some time later DeVante says it is about King, he does not want to be with him anymore. Starr's dad says he has going through this before and that DeVante just have to hide from King.

Shooting in the neighborhood

Some days after Starr had been interviewed at the news, many people the drive past their house were trowing stones at their windows. This scared Starr and her family too much and they realized that they could no longer live in this neighborhood. They decided to move to another house, with a better location.

Intervju at the news

After some days Starr got an attorney and she wants to speak about how Khalil died. Starr told her version about the shooting. At the end, the interviewer asks Starr why she thinks the police did shoot Khalil. Then Starr said that Khalil was a member of the KingLord and that he sold dope, he had no choice, he needed money, to help his family. Immediately Starr regretted, of course King will see this as a disclosure for his gang and give Starr revenge.

DeVante moves into Uncle Carlos

Since DeVante is in trouble with King, he needs to hide himself from King, therefore Starr's dad came up with an idea. He thought that DeVante could move along with Uncle Carlos, until King forget about him. This was an good idea and Uncle Carlos said it was ok if he wanted to live with him for a while.

Seven's birthday

Today it is Seven's birthday, he turns eighteen and two days ago he graduated in school. He celebrates with his family and friends in Uncle Carlos house. Suddenly Starr got a call, it is Seven's mom, she asks if she can come indoor. Starr gives the phone to Seven and Seven says "ok". Out his mom stays, she starts saying "Why did you not invite me to you birthday?"Seven says "You have never been a mom for me. You have never celebrated my birthday, so why should you now? You are not a mom for me."

The policeman tells his version

The clock is 7p.m. and Starr is with her friends Hailey and Maya. They sit in the living room and watching Tv. Suddenly they see the news at the screen, it is the policeman that killed Khalil. The father to the policeman says, "He have worked in the police in sixteen years. He stopped the car because the cars backlights did not worked and he was driving too fast.""The police man had also seen something in the door that he thought was a gun, but was a hairbrush."

Interrogation with the statement

Today is Starr going to an interrogation with the statement. The overhead asks very difficult questions, but Starr tries to answer all of them as best as she can. The overhead says to the end that Starr will get information if the policeman will get arrested or not.

Ishea helps

They all get inside the bedroom. DeVante is laying at the bed with blood dripping from the nose and from a scar at the cheek. Starr helps him up on his feet. He can not even stand upraised. Suddenly they hears somebody right outside the door. Ishea, Sevens mom comes indoor. We all were quiet for a long time, until Ishea says that they have to go outside before King see you.

DeVante in truble again

Starr is on her way through the store, but suddenly she gets a call from her brother, Seven. He says that DeVante has been away for a long time and no-one know were he is. Starr says to Seven that he have to pick her up. Starr goes to the car. Seven is talking in the phone, he end the call and says to Starr. "Kenya is with DeVante, he is in Kings house." It took 30min to get to Kings house. They goes quiet inside and see Kenya in the hallway. She says DeVante is inside the bedroom next to Starr.

Demonstration for justice

They drive from King's house. They hear at the radio, and suddenly they says on the radio that the policeman that killed Khalil is not going to be arrested. Starr was shocked, how could they do this, it is so unfair. They continue listing to the radio, it says it is a demonstration in Garden Heights because Khalil has been punished wrong. Starr and they other decided to take a part of it.

Fire in the store

During the demonstration the police came and threw teargas. Starr and the her friends got panic but were saved by a guy, named Goon. They runs into Starrs dad store. Suddenly they began seeing flames. The store is on fire. They run out as fast as they can. They got outside and see King and the KingLords.

King got arrested

Suddenly the police come and ask who that have set the store on fire. Many people around had seen what happened and they all says it was King that did it. Then King got arrested. All were happy, finally people living in Garden Heights could stop caring about King and do that thy want to.
