    Eli Whitney becomes the first person to invent the cotton gin and it has a huge impact on the cotton buisness boosting sales in cotton. It also had the adverse reaction though of causing more people to buy slaves, and the invention of the cotton gin is seen as one cause of the civil war.

    The Embargo Act of 1807 did keep us out of the Napoleanic War but it didns't keep us from being crtiticised. What the act did was it prevented Americans from selling goods to other countires. As you would imagine this had a negative impact on the US, restricting our trade put a tight grip on our economy.

    To keep the amount of free states and slave states in congress they compromised. The compromise added Maine as a free state and Missouri a slave state. Part of the compromise made slavery illegal in the Louisiana Territory.

    The Tariff of Abominations were used to keep Northern factories in buisness by taxing imported goods. This affected the South negativly because other countries ut taxes on their goods causing the south to lose money.

    This begun around the 1820's when America's economy started to slump. This slump is waht caused the tariff of 1828 and later the tariff of 1832 to help heal the wounds the tariff of 1828 caused. It did little though because it didn't change the situation much. This started talk of South Carolinians wanting to possibly leave the union. In 1833 Andrew Jackson issued the force bill which allowed him to use the army and navy to make sure acts of congress are being followed,this strained relations.

    In the Compromise of 1850 a great deal of important acts were passed. California was admitted into the Union as a free state, The South stop the WIlmot Proviso whcih would have a banned slavery in the new territories, slave trade was outlawed in D.C. and what had the biggest impact was the pass of the fugitive slave act.

    The under ground railroad became another one of the causes of the civil war. The helping of slaves become free engraged slave owners and helped cause the fugitive slave act.

    The Fugitive Slave act was put into place around 1850 and was meant to quell the rage of slave owners. What this did was it allowed slave owners to take free slaves back with them and enslave them. This spurred enormous outrage among abolitionist if anything it was more gasoline thrown onto the fire of their hearts, further seperating the North and the South.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin is a very controversal book written in 1852 and it was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It is contributed with being one of the things that may have sparked the Civil War. It caused upset in the South and was even burned by many, ironically though when the books were purchased for burning it only bolstered sales.

    The Kansas Nebraska was passed in hopes to relive national tension on slavery by allowing the two states to choose if they wanted to be free or not. This back fired of course, sparking a flame in abolitionist's hearts. This started a conflict known as bleeding Kansas.

    Bleeding Kansas occured in 1854 and was a proxy war between abolitionists and pro-slavery associates. This all started because tw states were given the choice on whether or not they wanted to be a slave state or a free state.

    The Dred Scott v. Sanford caused the US Supreme Court to make a decision and that decision was that African Americans were truly not American citizens and had no right to sue. They also decreed that the government had no right to intervene in slavery for the territories of the United States.

    There was a radical abolitionist with a wild look in his eyes named John Brown who managed to stage an armed slave revoult. John Brown seiged a armory in Virginia and ecouraged slaves to take arms and fight their oppressors. This revoult was curtailed by the arrival of U.S. marines.

    The election of 1860 was between the Republican Abraham Lincoln, the Southern Democratic John C. Breckenridge, the Constitutional Union John Bell. and Democratic Stephen A. Douglas. Abraham Lincoln managed to achieve victory by winning the electoral college votes. This caused such an outrage in the South they secceeded.

    South Carolina was the first State in the Untied State's history to ever seced from the Union. This was a huge upset in the country since nothing like this had ever happened before people became very unsure as to what to do.

    When South Carolina succeeded Fort Sumter didn't really agree with that so it led them having to defend against the confederate army. Supplies were on route but the bombarding had begun it went on for two until Major Anderson had surrendered. This was the first violent action that was the civil war this gave hope to four other states and cause them to also suced.

    When the battle of Fort Sumter broke out Lincoln made a call of distress to the American People. He urged men to help and stop the rebellion but all this did was cause more states to leave. This contributed to gving even more states the hope that they could be independent.
