    The Proclamation of Neutrality
    President George Washington said that America would not get involved with the ongoing conflict between France and Great Britain. Britain began to impress American sailors. This led to The War of 1812'.

  • Alien and Sedition Acts

    Alien and Sedition Acts
    President John Adams decided that he should have the power over foreign people, so he made the 'Alien and Sedition Acts' that allowed him to do so. Many states did not approve of this so they made laws against it.
  • War with Tripoli

    War with Tripoli
    Tripoli declared war with America. It was a naval war that lasted 4 years. When the war was done in 1805, Thomas Jefferson and the leaders of Tripoli signed a treaty in June of 1805. After the war, Jefferson increased the navy because of the funding the war needed.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    Louisiana Purchase
    President Thomas Jefferson signed a treaty named the "Louisiana Purchase" that expanded America by more than 200%. It was about $0.03 an acre, and he later sent Meriwhether Lewis to explore this new and foreign land.
  • The War of 1812

    It was president James Madison who declared war in 1812, because the British invaded America's shipping ports and began impressing American Navy sailors. Britain also burned the White House. It was at this time that Francis Scott Key wrote our national anthem "The Star Spangled Banner".

    Britain was meddling in America and South America's decisions so President James Monroe decided to do something about it. He established "The Monroe Doctrine" which said that any act of violence of continued meddling would result in war against Britain. This was important because it made America the world power of both North and South America.

    John Adams' grandson, John Quincy Adams was president when he passed this law. The "Tariff of Abominations" said that the south had to pay more for manufactured goods. They also lost more money on raw materials.
  • Indian Removal Act

    Indian Removal Act
    President Andrew Jackson knew about the white settlers seizing and enslaving Indians, yet he did nothing about it. The white settlers forced the Indians to walk 1200 miles across Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. This event is known as "The Trail of Tears" because over 4,000 Indians died.
