The Family incident

  • 1

Cathy did not like the authority that her parents tried to enforce on her so she decides to run away. "In the morning she was gone. Her straw traveling basket was gone..." (Steinbeck, Page 82).
  • 2

Cathy's parents after finding her belongings gone notified the police and found her in Boston. Mr. Ames brought her back home for which she was then whipped.
  • 3

After being whipped, Cathy began to have a hatred for her parents. "... Although she had forced him to whip Cathy, she hated him for doing it." (Steinbeck, Page 83).
  • 4

Cathy Begins to act kind, nice and tries to be better at school after being whipped by her father, she starts to try to portray herself as an innocent little girl who wouldn’t do anything wrong.
  • 5

Cathy begins to build a future for herself as a teacher." She talked to the principle about examinations for her teaching certificate, perhaps a year early." (Steinbeck, 83).
  • 6

Cathy, being an obedient and kind child wanted to fix up her home, so she "... stuffed papers all around the edges of the foundation to block the draft." (Steinbeck, Page 84).
  • 7

Cathy would also "When the kitchen door squeaked she oiled the hinges and then the lock that the turned too hard... she made it her duty to keep the lamps filled..." (Steinbeck, Page 84).
  • 8

Cathy would make sure everything was clean even the chimney. "She invented a way of dipping the chimneys in a big can of kerosene" (Steinbeck, Page 84).
  • 9

Cathy after oiling most of the house up wanted to make sure no one would try to find her, so she gathered blood from chickens into a jelly jar. she then hid the jar under a step in the kitchen.
  • 10

Cathy left her home and went to the bank to receive the money from the tannery's payroll. As she left to that, her plan would be coming to an end.
  • 11

Cathy's house cleaning all had a purpose, when Cathy cleaned the chimney with kerosene; she was just making it easier for the chimney to burn as kerosene is extremely flammable.
  • 12

When Cathy blocked the drafts with paper in the edges of the houses foundation, it was just to trap the fumes the fire would give off which would cause anyone to become disorientated.
  • 13

The fumes given off by the fire can also cause people to faint or black out especially if they are trapped in an area and are not circulated away from people.
  • 14

Cathy also had her lamps filled so when the fire was put out, there would be a reason as to how it started and no one would blame Cathy. The blood Cathy collected was so everyone would think she died.
  • 15

Cathy tried to create a false future for herself so no one would doubt her causing the fire as she had great grades and would become a teacher and did not have the appearance of a murderer or an arsonist.
