The Fall of the Berlin Wall

  • Germany is divided into four sectors.

    World War Two is officially over and due to the lack of trust other nations have towards Germany they divide Berlin into four different sectors: the American, British, and French all in the west and in the East, the Soviet.

  • A pass is now required to travel throughout Germany.

    To travel between the four sectors in Germany you now have to have a 30 day valid Interzone pass.

  • A currecncy reform in Berlin occurs, the Reichsmark is now called the Deutschemark.

    On this day the currency is converted from the once Reichsmark to the new Deutschemark

  • The Berlin Blockade begins.

    The Berlicn Blockade attempts to limit the Western allies' access to roads, railway's, and canals all accross the sectors of Berlin

  • The FRG (Federal Republic of Germany) is founded by West Germany

    The Federal Republic of Germany is founded by West Germany.

  • The GDR (German Democratic Republic) is founded by East Germany

    The German Democratic Republic is founded by East Germany

  • The end of the Interzone pass.

    The West waives the Interzone pass, the Soviet Union follows, but Easteners now need permission to travel into the West.

  • It is forbidden to leave the East withouth permission.

    It is forbidden to leave East Germany an if you were to violate this you were to be prosecuted with prison up to three years.

  • Meeting between Nikita Khrushchev and Walter Ulbricht.

    “We must create the conditions so that the GDR economy will not be vulnerable to our enemies. We didn’t know that the GDR was so vulnerable to West Germany. This is not good; we must correct this now.” (W. Ulbricht)

  • The Berlin border between East and West Berlin is closed

    The zonal boundary is sealed in the morning by East German troops. “Shock workers” from East Germany and Russia a seal off the border with barrier of barbed wire and light fencing that eventually became a complex series of wall, fortified fences, gun positions and watchtowers heavily guarded and patrolled.   • Bradenburg Gate closes.

  • All crossing points are closed for West Berlin citezens.

  • President J.F.K visits Berlin.

    President John F. Kennedy delivers his famous "Ich bin ein Berliner" (I am a Berliner) speech in West Berlin directly infront of the Berlin Wall

  • After two years West Berliners are allowed to travel into the East.

  • The Four Power's Agreement is established.

    The Four Power's Agreement over Berlin allows traveling into the East much easier for Westerner's.

  • President Ronald Reagan visits Berlin.

    President Ronald Reagan visits Berlin and delivers a speech pleading to Soviet Leader,Mikhail Gorbachev, to tear down the Berlin Wall.

  • After almost 30 years the Berlin Wall is opened.

    The GDR announces that visits throughout West Germany and Berlin will finally be permitted. By the thousand Eastener's pass into West Berlin as people begin to tear down the wall.

  • The Brandenburg Gate is opened.

  • Germany is formally reunited

    Although before the fall of the Soviet Union, for some the reunification of Germany marks the end of the Cold War.
