The evolution of online learning

  • 18th Century the beginnings for online learning philosophy

    1800’s philosophy for education outside of the classroom. Issac Pitman. Creator for the the concept of correspondence learning (Kentor, H.E. 2014). Learning materials mailed out to students in particular those who could not attend class in person.
  • Radio

    1984 Guglielmo Marconi invented the spark transmitter 1st patent for a radio device
    1906 - University of Wisconsin Extension program was founded as an alternative for teaching units.
    1919 - the 1st amateur wireless station licensed by the federal government specifically for broadcasting educational content (Engel, 1936).
    1920’s Radio became the new communication using technology for the community at large.
  • Television

    1932-1937 University of Iowa (Koenig & Hill, 1962). Used television as a medium which disseminates programs devoted to giving information, instruction, cultural and/or public affairs, and entertainment. It was sparsely used until the television was accessible to a wider audience in their homes.
  • TV

    1960-1970s educational instruction via the television was used to display information and concepts, but only in the classroom; a synchronous learning environment. (H.E., Kentnor 2014).
  • Online learning explored

    1980s corporate America introduced the concept of computer base learning for in-house training of their employees.
  • Adjunct Mode Learning - the adaptation of blended learning.

    1970s this type of online learning was used as a complement to the overall curriculum ( Harasim, L 2006a). It was not a significant part of the course and occurred inside the classroom that enhanced activities. It was largely used for emails, contact b/t student and instructor, distribution of course materials, quizzes, submission of assignments, and grades notifications.
  • University of Phoenix

    1989 University of Phoenix Elgin using CompuServe and became one of the first and most successful education institutions to offer online services as an alternative to traditional face to face learning. (The University of Phoenix, n.d.).
  • World Wide Web

    1990-1991 WWW was unveiled. Traditional it was created in a work group of scientists to facilitate a collaborative between scientists.
    1993 the WWW was made free and available to the public.
    The University of Phoenix were also the pioneer in adapting this format for their online learning curriculum.
  • Learning Management Systems

    1999 LMS software created- a software application that creates an uniform method and plan for online learning
    Three platforms: Corporate LMS, Education LMS, and Content design LMS.
    Blackboard the most widely used in higher education settings.
  • Asynchronous learning

    2001 Alfred P. Sloan Foundation (Foundation) created the Asynchronous Learning Network (ALN) created to explore alternatives for non traditional learning outside of the classroom.

    Web 2.0 and Blended online learning advancements

    Innovations of the internet launching to the public, social objects, electronic mail aka email, search engines and move forward to blended learning, that includes video, audio, blogs, Wikis, virtual interactions , faculty buy in all helped to create the current environment and experience for online learning ( Harasim, L. 2014).
  • Distance learning today and tomorrow

    2011 - 65% of institutions report online learning as essential for 5eir curriculum programs. ( Kentnor, L. 2014)
    2012 - education will continue to be cyberize as society adjusts to digital technology.
