Archaeologists found makeup in a South African cave that's 164,000 years old. The makeup, made up of about 60 pieces of ground-up rock that would have been a reddish-orange or a pink-brown color, is called one of three hallmarks of modern life found there.

Humans are painting their bodies using plant and earthen materials in about 10,000 BC. Sometimes, the paintings were to imitate nature/animals, and other times the paintings were from natural formations they would have seen back then.

Men and women in Egypt used scented oils and ointments to clean and soften their skin and cover up body odor. Cosmetics were an important part of Egyptian hygiene and health. Oils and creams were used for protection against the hot Egyptian sun and dry winds.

Egyptian women applied galena mesdermet and malachite to their faces for color and definition(contour). They employed a combination of burnt almonds, oxidized copper, different-colored coppers ores, lead, ash, and ochre to enhance the eyes in an almond shape. Women carried cosmetics to parties in makeup boxes and kept them under the chairs they sat on.

Makeup was used to keep the older people in Egyptian communities from allowing their skin wrinkle. Egyptians also believed that makeup kept them safe from evil. As well as the Egyptians, the Chinese and Greeks also aided in technical advances in makeup. The Chinese started using waxes to paint their nails. The Greeks used chalk to whiten their faces and lipstick to embellish the lips.

People in the 1920's got tired of reapplying makeup day after day, so they began using another method; tattooing. They would tattoo their lipstick on, or even shave their eyebrows off and tattoo them on. Clearly, after doing it people regretted it. That's part of the reason that this seized to continue.

Lip gloss was introduced by Max Factor. New shades of red lipstick were developed, although were soap-based and very drying.

As well as trying to make makeup smaller and more accessible when not at home, companies started making better casings for their mascaras and eyeliners.

In 2005, makeup for men became more widely available. As well as selling women product, companies started selling makeup more geared towards the male gender. Although not fully accepted, gender equality was big to a lot of people.
