    The elections were between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, and both parties thought that their party's success will determine the fate of the nation. They put their arguments in the newspapers, but ultimately Thomas Jefferson won.
  • Lewis and Clark's Expedition

    Lewis and Clark's Expedition
    These explorers explored the new Louisiana Purchase with the Corps. of discovery. They wrote extensive, detailed journals describing their discoveries, and their adventures.
  • USS Chesapeake

    USS Chesapeake
    One of the major events on the road to war, the impressment of the US sailors from the USS Chesapeake by the British upset many people, and the government.
  • War of 1812

    War of 1812
    This war had been building up for some time, and many things happened because of it. The US gained control of lake Erie, despite being outnumbered 20 ships to 100's of British ships. They ended up winning the war, gaining the respect of foreign nations along the way. The war ended in 1815
  • Cumberland Road

    Cumberland Road
    Cumberland Road was the first road built by the federal government. Started in 1815, the road eventually ran from Cumberland, Maryland, to Vandalia, Illinois. The workers constructed the 66 foot wide road, going through legit forests to get the job done. Nothing could stop the American drive.

    The Erie Canal
    This canal, which was started in 1817 and finished in 1825, was painstakingly hand-dug by immigrants. It ran all the way from New York, all the way to Lake Erie. The canal established New York as a port city, and further connected America.
  • Rush Bagot Agreement

    Rush Bagot Agreement
    The Rush Bagot agreement limited naval presence on the great lakes. It helped to de-escalate post war tension, and both sides agreed to compromise.
  • Convention of 1818

    Convention of 1818
    This compromise solved the problem in the Pacific northwest. Both America and Britain compromised, and both agreed to occupy Oregon Country together, and both would profit from the valuable fur trade there. This convention also set the border between the US and Canada at 49 degrees North, easing border disputes.

    Adams-Onis Treaty
    This treaty settled all of the border disputes between America and Spain. The United States gained all of east Florida, expanding the country even more.
  • McCulloch v. Maryland

    McCulloch v. Maryland
    McCulloch v. Maryland was another important event in America's legal history. It allowed for the creation of a national bank, and further reiterated the power of the Supreme Court.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    This agreement within the US made sure the balance of power remained equal. Missouri was going to enter the union as a slave state, upsetting the balance of power. Luckily, Maine entered as a free state, making everyone happy.

    The Spy is a novel written by James Fenimore Cooper, and it was a massive inspiration to many artists to practice their crafts. Cooper's success played a part in the artistic revival in the US, as the artists saw that someone else made it doing what they love. Cooper is a prime example of the American dream.

    This was another novel by Cooper, the first of 5 in a series. He apparently had a knack for writing best-sellers, because Cooper's success even further strengthened the artistic revolution.
  • Monroe Doctorine

    Monroe Doctorine
    The Monroe Doctorine was a big declaration by the President at the State of the Union. He was very clear to Europe: Any act of colonization of the Americas would be taken as a declaration of war. Understandably, many Europeans criticized the declaration, but with the victory from the war of 1812 behind them, the USA felt pretty confident.
  • The Election of 1824

    The Election of 1824
    This was one of the more interesting elections in US history. This election was between Andrew Jackson and John Adams. Andrew Jackson won the popular vote, but did not receive enough electoral votes. Many believed that some shady stuff went down, and that Adams paid off the electors to get the position. As a result, Adams' support weakened.
