2nd Continental congress adopts the Declaration of Independence drafted by Thomas Jefferson , Established the United States as an independent nation . The rights of neither woman nor slaves were covered under this document . Philosphy of John Locke was evident in declaration. Life , Liberty , Pursuit of happiness. Government exists to protect individual rights. People can overthrow Government when it does not go as planned.
