Bill is first stung by a triffid
Bill was stung by a young triffid in his garden when he was trying to get it to walk. This sting at a young age helped build up his resistance to the poison in the future. -
Bill gets a job
Right out of high school, Bill gets a job at Arctic & European Oil Company, and studies triffids for his career. -
Bill gets triffid poison in his eyes
Bill gets triffid poison in his eyes and is hospitalized for a week in order to fix his temporary blindness. -
Earth passes through comet debris
Beautiful green flashes covered the sky, and nearly everybody went out to watch them. The next day, everyone who watched them goes blind. -
Bill takes his bandages off
When no one comes to help him, Bill takes his own bandages off and realizes that everyone else in the hospital is blind. -
Bill finds Josella Playton
Bill heard a girl screaming and ran to find who it was. He finds her being attacked by a blind man, and rescues her. Together, they gather supplies and find a house to stay in over night. -
Bill and Josella join the group at the University
When they see a spotlight overnight, Bill and Josella find the source in the morning and find a group of mostly sighted people at a University. They end up joining this group. -
Bill is caught in Coker's fire trap
While they were sleeping, Coker decided to send smoke through the building and pretend there was a fire in order to weed out some sighted people for his project. Bill was one of them who was caught. -
Bill is sent to a section of the city
Shackled to two big blind men, Bill is forced to take care of a group of blind people in one section of the city. They find a place to sleep and scrounge for food around the neighborhood. -
Bill and Coker team up
All of the blind that Bill was taking care of either died of illness or committed suicide. All alone, he heads back to the University to see if he can find others. There he meets Coker, and they decide to drive up together to Tynsham after seeing a sign on the University building. -
Bill and Coker leave Tynsham
Unsatisfied with the lifestyle at Tynsham, Bill and Coker head to Beaminster in hopes of finding Michael Beadley and his party. They don't find him, but instead find a man named Stephen and two of his friends. Together they search the city for Beadley's party and Josella, but cannot find them. -
Bill seperates to find Josella
Coker, Stephen, and his friends head back to Tynsham to rejoin the group. Bill decides to seperate from them and keep on trying to find Josella. His first place to look for her is a country side manor that she had mentioned before. -
Bill finds Susan and Josella
On his way to the manor, Shirning, Bill finds a little sighted girl named Susan and takes her along with him. Together, they keep on driving and end up finding Shirning later that night. Bill is reunited with Josella and meets the people who were already living at Shirning; Dennis, Mary, and Joyce. -
Bill checks back at Tynsham
Bill decides to go back to Shirning to see if Coker arrived safely. When he gets there, he finds the place deserted, without a single person in sight. Then he heads back to Shirning. -
Bill begins to build a fence around Shirning
In order to keep the triffids out of the general area, Bill builds a fence around Shirning. -
Triffids first attack the house at Shirning
Even though the fence was in place, the triffids knocked it down and stampeded the place. Luckily, Bill and Susan were able to get them out with flame throwers. -
David Masen is born
Bill and Josella's first son David Masen is born. -
Ivan Simpson arrives at Shirning
When flying in his helicopter, he saw the bonfire that Susan had made and landed at Shirning. Ivan was one of the people who were origionally in the University group, and asked Bill and his group to join with him and Beadley's group. They agreed that they would move in a few months. -
Mr. Torrence comes to Shirning
Torrence comes to Shirning and tries to claim the land for his own purposes, and add more blind people to the building for Bill and Josella to take care of. Not liking this plan at all, everybody from the Shirning group flee over night to join Beadley's group on an island.
