You meet Alexa Daley and you discover that she is a very curious and adventurous twelve year old. Her dad is the major of Lathbury and every year Alexa and her dad go to Bridewill. It is then, you learn how walls were put around the city to protect the people. While her father is busy attending meetings in Bridewell, Alexa uses her spyglass to try and look over the wall. She is stopped when she is caought by Pervis. Alexa is upset because she wants to know what lies beyong the walls. -

Warvold, the creator of the cities ends up passing with Alexa and they hold a fueral for him. Warvold's son takes his place and Alexa flies to the library where she loves to spend her time. After talking about Warvold's wife Alexa first learns about Jocastas. Alexa is shocked when she finds these jocastas on the two library cats, Sam and Pepper. She then wonders what themeaning of these jocastas are. Now that Warvold is gone Pervis gets as mean as ever and uses the spyglass against her. -

Alexa decides to go explore and when she goes into the library she finds a keyhole that matches with the key she retrieved from Warvold. After opening the enterance she wonders through the dark tunnel until she comes up into a forest. She meets Yipes who claims he has waited for her arrival. Yipes leads Alexa to a small pond where she finds a small emerald stone, similiar to the jocastas. -
94-133
Alexa sleeps and awakens to a wolf named Darius. Darius explains to her that the emerald stone she found allows her to speak with animals. She leaves with Darius after he tells her that Warvold had chosen her. He leads her into a small tunnel where she finds two concicts discussing the stones. Darius explains the power of the stones and that Alexa must not let the convicts find the rest. -

After returning to Bridewell with a map of the underground tunnels. Alexa learns how Sebastion is the leader of the convicts and that she must find him. She also discovers that the cat and the hawk and traitors. Alexa learns more about Pervis and how he is just jealous of all the opportunities Alexa has that he didnt. In the end Alexa and Murphy get the medallions off the cats and discover a riddle. Elephant+worship=Sebastian.Alexa wonders about the meaning of it. -

Alexa wakes up early to tell her dad and the other leaders about her past couple of days. Alarmed, they set out to block all the tunnel enterances and Alexa convinces them to release Pervis. Later, Murphy and Alexa discover another hidden door but after getting attaced by the cats, Alexa kills them and her and murphey unlock the last door. They are getting closer to finding out who Sebastion is and what he plans to do. -

They go through the secret passage together where they are trapped by Sebastion or whom is revieled as Ganesh. He then reveals he poisoned Warvold and disguised himself as a major to protect himself. Danius and Yipes break through the wall and kill Ganesh. In the end, Alexa discovers the convicts trying to scale the wall. She becomes friends with John Chrostopher and realizes not all of them are bad. Danius is reunited with his family and the book ends on a hook for the next book in the series.
