    The US policy of containment recognized the possibility that Eastern Europe was already lost to communism. It was used to stop the further spread of communism. This related to the Iron Curtain because it was used to help stop the spread of communism. The West was the Democratic side and the East was the Communist party.   • Truman Doctrine

    The purpose of the Truman Doctrine was that the US gave Greece and Turkey $400 million in economic aid to help these nations resist communism. It established that the US would support a democratic nation under communism threat. This was meant to be helpful because it reoriented US foreign policy and helped aid other nations.
  • Marshall Plan

    The purpose of the Marshall Plan was that it was a massive effort to rebuild postwar Europe. The US felt the need to implement this plan to respond to the concern of the American policy makers that Communism parties were growing stronger in Europe. This reflected belief that the US would provide aid and create strong democracies which would open new markets.

    The Berlin Airlift occurred to help the eastern site of the wall by providing them with food and fuel. This made the USSR look bad because they were not helping their people. This made the US look good because they were aiding other countries that weren't them self.

    NATO was the intergovernmental military alliance between several North American and European states based on the North American treaty. This was formed to defend each other from communism to take over the nation. This was created by the democratic nations.

    The threat of spreading Communism led to the start of the Korean War. The start of the war began with North Korea invading South Korea.

    McCarthyism is the practice of making accusations of subversion or treason without proper regard of evidence. The threat of Communism and the witch hunt led to the rise of McCarthyism.

    Events during McCarthyism

    The Rosenbergs were convicted and executed for conspiracy to commit espionage. The House Committee on Un-American Activities was an investigative committee of the US House of Representatives created to investigate alleged disloyalty and Communist ties.

    Fall of McCarthyism

    McCarthy started to say that the military was Communist and people did not like that at all. He lost his credibility because he blatantly lied when he said this.
  • MacArthur

    MacArthur got fired because he made public statements that contradicted the admin policies. He threatened the role of Commander in Chief.
  • Effects/Impacts of Korean War

    The was ended when an armistice was signed. This impacted current day Korea because present day Korea remains separate and occupy almost the same territory they had when the war began.

    Vietnam

    The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was a joint resolution that the US Congress passed on August 7th, 1964 in response to the Gulf of Tonkin incident. Vietnam lead to the War Powers Act of 1973 to reassert Congressional authority over the decision to send American troops to war.

    The Domino Theory was the belief held that if one country fell to communism, it's neighbors would soon follow. This most directly applied during the Cold War with the West side vs the East side.
  • Warsaw Pact

    The Warsaw Pact was a collective defense treaty among the Soviet Union. It was formed as a response to NATO. The Communist nations came together so if one was attacked, they all would attack. It was formed by the Communist nations.
  • National Interstate and Defense Highways Act of 1956

    Eisenhower wanted to develop a national interstate system because in the case of an atomic attack on key cities, there would be a quick evacuation. This impacted American society by eliminating unsafe roads, inefficient routes, and traffic jams.
  • Bay of Pigs Invasion

    The US felt it was necessary to invade Cuba because they intended to provoke popularity for an uprising against Fidel Castro.
  • Berlin Wall

    The Berlin Wall was built to separate Communists and Democrats. This was symbolic of the Cold War and the fight between the US and the USSR.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    This began because the Soviet Union made nuclear weapons and placed them 90 miles off the coast of the US. The Cuban Missile Crisis ended when the US and USSR agreed to dismantle all of the nuclear weapons. This was a threat to American security because if the USSR launched the missiles, the US would be destroyed.

    President Nixon issued the policy of Détente. This was a foreign policy trying to improve relations between the Soviet Union and the United States.
  • SALT Agreements

    The SALT Agreements were intended to restrain the arms race in strategic ballistic missiles armed with nuclear weapons. This was a positive step because it was an attempt to stop violence and nuclear weapons as a whole.
  • Strategic Defense Initiative (STAR WARS)

    STAR WARS intent was to develop a sophisticated anti ballistic missile system in order to prevent missile attacks from countries, especially the USSR. This impacted the United States and the USSR by becoming a turning point in the war and helping to end the war.
  • Afghanistan vs USSR

    The US was involved in this war because they wanted to stop the spread and conflict of Communism. The US involvement in this war had a negative impact on the US because the Taliban got very angry over the US involvement, which in turn, caused terrorism against the US, leading to the September 11th attacks.
  • Berlin Wall Fall

    The Berlin Wall being removed was a significant event in the Cold War because it showed the fall of the war itself and the division between the Democrats and the Communists.
  • Fall of the Soviet Union

    The Soviet Union fell December 25th, 1991. That is the date the President of the USSR resigned.
