Berlin Blockade
Berlin Germany which happens to be Germany's capital was split into four sections during the Cold War. Three of these sections were run by democratic countries while only one was communist. The three democratic parts formed together to make West Berlin and in order to force communism the Soviets blocked Berlin off from the rest of the world. -
Berlin Airlift
Because Berlin was completely blocked off without supplies or really anything the democratic countries that were available began to send planes full of supplies over the barackades. This went on until the the blockade was finally lifted. -
Formation of NATO
NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization. This was basically a treaty/ alliance between all the major democratic nations saying that if the Soviets attacked they would all come to help fight against them. -
National Security Council Report NSC-86
The NSC-86 was a top secret US policy which mostly said that the policy of contianment need to be immensly increased or else communism would take root on a widespread scale. -
Chinese Civil War Ended
The Chinese Revolution was fought between two sides and like neverything else in the Cold War those two sides were democratic and communist. The war didn't pffically break out until the communist leader Mao decided to rename part of China which then led to a fierce war between the two sides. -
Korean War
The Korean War began when communist North Korea deicded to send some 70,000 troops across the 38th parallel in democratic South Korea. This resulted in major conflicts between the two which ended in a stalemate with no new land beinging lost or gained by either. -
Truman Fires General McArthur
Truman Fired General McArthur after the NSC-86 came about. McArthur felt that major violence was need to enforce containment while Truman felt they could enforce it with only conventional weapons and peacefulness (as to keep from starting WW3) This difference in ideas led to Truman deciding it would be best to let McArthur go. -
Formation of the Warsaw PAct
The Warsaw Pact was formed almost aws a mockery of the NATO organization because it basically entaled the same things but for the few major communist countries instead. -
Launching of Sputnik
Sputnik is knows as the worlds first artifical satilleite in space. Sputnik was succesfully launched by the Soviets which cause an "Arms Race" for the space world resulting in things like NASA to try and get the US ahead of the Soviets. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis was the US discovery of possible nuclear weapons hidden in Cuba by the Soviet Union. This was the closest the Cold War came to being destructive. If a war would have broken out between the US and the Soviets it could have caused millions of deaths.
