    On this very day, the U.S policy changed suddenly when Henry Stimson read out a full report on the atomic bomb test to president Truman and James Byrnes. Truman had previous knowledge about the testing, but didn't actually do anything about it until he heard the full story. According to Winston Churchill, the report changed Truman a lot. The report also changed Churchill, and goaded them into starting the Cold War.

    On this day, Winston Churchill stated that the Russians have cut off Eastern Europe from the western part of the world. This is also considered the start of the Cold War.

    On the 8th of January 1959, Fidel Castro took over Cuba. This was a big problem because if Castro decided to team up with the Russians or the Chinese, it could spell disaster for America as a missile launch could happen.

    This was when the Americans finally decided to invade Cuba to try and stop the missile crisis by overthrowing Castro's government. All in all, this failed and America lost 100 men, and over 1,100 were captured. Good job America!

    The Strategic Arms Limitation Talks were a discussion by the Americans and the Soviets to come to an agreement on curtailing the manufacturing nuclear weapons. There were two SALTS, number one was on a treaty for anti-ballistics missiles and also an interim agreement on protocol on limitation of strategic weapons. The second one was about setting limits on strategic launchers, and the amount of rockets overall.

    Soviets invade Afghanistan.
    So, the soviets invaded Afghanistan during the Afghan civil war to try and maintain a friendly and social government on its border, it was the only time Russia invaded a country outside of the eastern bloc, a strategic decision met by worldwide condemnation.
