  • The Containment policy

    The Containment policy
    The Policy of Containment was outlined in the Truman doctrine in 1947. It expressed the USA's movement to keep Communist ideals confined to the Soviet Union and eliminate any expansionary methods that they choose to take. This is significant because the aggressive enforcement led to wars such as the Korean and Vietnamese wars, which in turn left many people dead in its wake. Although it didn't totally keep the Soviet movement from spreading, it definitely stemmed the flow of Communism in Europe.

    The Communist party of China was founded in 1921, and attained control in 1947 after the Mao led revolution. This was significant because it was a large leap forward for the Communist movement. It also directly opposed the policy of containment of the USA. It affected thousands of Chinese citizens and people around the world as it showed the world a new kind of Communism, not Leninism or Marxism, but the newly developed Maosim.

    NATO
    The formation of NATO or the North Atlantic treaty organisation was a direct result of the Cold War, and tensions between allied Western nations and the Eastern communist bloc countries. It was formed on April 4th 1949 and included countries such as Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the UK and the United States. It was significant because it represented the alliance between democratic nations and had the strength to oppose the USSR.
  • The Korean War

    The Korean War
    The Korean war was established due to differing ideals between North and South Korea. The war was spurred on by the Soviet's who advised the North Koreans to invade the south, whilst simultaneously supplying militaristic resources to them. This issue was raised in the United Nations, and as such US forces came to aid the South Koreans. This is a significant event in the Cold war because it represents the tension between the Soviets and US, Communism and Capitalism, and also the loss of life.
  • The Warsaw Pact

    The Warsaw Pact
    The Warsaw pact was an agreement that came into fruition after the formation of NATO, between Eastern European Communist countries. The countries that joined the legion were Albania, Poland, Romania, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia and Bulgaria and together formed "a mutual defence organisation". The Soviet Union was the key player in the pact, and dominated the negotiations. This pact is significant because it was the formation of the communist bloc that had the ability to appose NATO.

    The Hungarian Uprising
    The Hungarian uprising was a series of revolts that took place in Budapest 1956. It was done due to Soviet Military occupation, corrupt politicians and the dominance of communist ideals. The uprising reached a tipping point in November 1956, when Hungary withdrew from the Warsaw Pact. It led to Soviets invading Budapest and destroying the last remnants of the revolution. It is significant because numerous lives were lost in the process of opposing Soviet ideals and recieved great media attention

    The Berlin was construction
    The Berlin Wall was a barrier that divided East Berlin to West Berlin. It was constructed by the German Democratic Republic in 1961, to prevent citizens of East Berlin from fleeing to the more prosperous West Berlin and had a great deal of success in doing so. It is an important event in the Cold War because it was a clear signal of the hostility between the super powers in the US and USSR, and had a great effect on a large amount of people,as citizens of Germany could no longer cross the border

    The Cuban Missile crisis
    The Cuban Missile crisis is one of the most recognisable events in the Cold war, as it represents the fulcrum of tensions between the USA and USSR. It started when the construction of nuclear weapons was sighted in Cuba by the Soviet Union resulting in a dangerous stand off between the two nations. It is significant because it is widely considered to be the closest the world has gotten two Nuclear destruction on a world wide basis, and could have resulted in the death of numerous lives.
