The Communist party in Poland wins the elections in poland for a new leader. The party, however used several forms of fraud and mischeif to gain their position atop the political spectrum. Once in power, they sustained their influence by killing off and imrpsioning their opposing forces. CHANGE

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is formed in order to deter the forces of the USSR as well as protect all of the powers involved from being singled out by another (most expectedly the USSR). This reprecented the first official united organization that is, at its core, against communism. CHANGE

Since the USA demonstrated its advanced technology in nuclear fusion, the USSR had been working on atomic bombs of their own. On the 29th of August, they successfully detonated their first ever nuclear weapon. This turned the tides with the Cold War due to the fact that a major deterring force to all powers was the USA's nuclear arsenal. CHANGE

In response to NATO, the USSR and several other countries signed the Warsaw Pact. This pact basically enabled full control by the Soviets of the armies of the countries that were associated with the Pact. This is a continuity of the back and forth action between the USA and the USSR. CONTINUITY

Fidel Castro rises to power in Cuba and immediately installs a Communist form of government. Cuban and Soviet governments become quite close and often times Soviets aid and protect Cuba and its interests. CHANGE

East Germany puts up a heavily guarded barrier between East and West Germany.This wall forms a legitamate border between each side as West Germany is rebuilt and begins to thrive while Eastern Germany undergoes no rebuilding. CHANGE

For the first time, USA faces a real military threat near "home soil". Soviet forces supply Cuba with missle equipment which is then aimed directly at the USA. Soviet officals claimed the missles were there for defense after the USA pleads the USSR to remove the treat from Cuban soil. CHANGE

After several years of struggle, civillians and officials tear down the Berlin Wall. This event opened up the world's eyes to the lack of wellfare and support Eastern Europe had gotten under the Soviets. CHANGE

Although the Cold War held some politcal and economic principles constant, it is evident that change was more prevalent in this time due to political uprisings and altercations, the rise of international interventions, and the overall change of attitudes between superpowers including, but not limited to, the USA and (formerly) the USSR.
