Iron Curtain Speech
Winston Churchill gave his Iron Curtain Speech, orginally named The Sinews of Peace, at Westminister College in Fulton Missori. In his speech he proclaimed that an "iron curtain" had desended on Europe. This speech changed the way the democratic nations viewed Communism. -
The Truman Doctrine
Presidant Truman announced a policy consisting of a warning to the USSR. Truman made it clear that the US would intervene and support any nation being threated of being taken over by an armed minority. -

The Soviet Union and US were in a competition to see who could get to space first. The Soviets sent the first man in to space and orbit the planet. -
Bay of Pigs
The US CIA trained Cuban refugees and launched an attack to over throw Fidel Castro. The attack was a complete failure because Castro had twice the amount of troops. Fidel Castro used this attack to rally support. -
Berlin Wall is Built
The Berlin Wall was built to prevent East Germans from fleeing to the West. It symbolized the division between democracy and Communisum. -

Many East Germans were fleeing to West Berlin, which was democratic, in hopes of a better life. Some the refugees were professinals of their trades, hurting East Berlin's economy. The Soviets built a wall, and closed of acess to West Berlin. -
Cuban Missle Crisis
The Soviet Union placed nuclear missles in Cuba, from which US spy planes discovered. Then the US put a blockabe around Cuba to prevent more nuclear weapons coming to Cuba. This started a 13 day standoff between the US and Cuba/Soviet Union. The United States and Soviet union came to an agreement that the Soviet union would remove the missles from Cuba if the US did not invade Cuba. A secret agreement was also made for the US to remove its nuclear weapons in Turkey. -

First Man on the Moon
The USA became the first country to send a man to the moon. They launched Apollo 11, and Neil Armstrong became the first to walk on the moon. -

President Nixon orders the withdrawl of US forces from Vietnam after the country became divided over the war. -
