The Space Race was a competition for dominance in space between the US and the Soviet Union. It began when the Soviet Union launched the first man-made satellite Sputnik into space. The Cuban Missle Crisis

After meeting for a week, JFK announces to the nation the discovery of the missles. The US then has a standoff with the Soviet Union after blockading Cuba to prevent the missles assembly. JFK and Krushchev after intense negotiations come to an agreement. The USSR will remove the missles from Cuba and the US promises not to invade and remove it's own missles from Turkey. -

The Vietnam War
As the US intensified it's communist containment policy it turned it's attention to Vietnam which was in turmoil. After providing advisors to South Vietnam to help train them to fight the invading forces. However President Johnsn decides to send combat troops to the country with millions of troops being deployed eventually. Public opinion as well as a failure to produce reults causes the US to pull out after years signing a peace treay with the North. -

The End of the Soviet Union and the Cold War
After years of unrest and economic stagnation the Soviet Union began to collapse. Former Soviet countries became independent one by one starting with Poland, finally Gorbachov resigns and the USSR dissolves itself.
