The outcome was that the Soviets and the US made an agreement to remove the missiles from cuba and the areas where the US had missiles as well.

The significance of this was that detente was taking place between the US and the Soviets. Detende is when hostility and restraint is eased between countries. The outcome of SALT I was exactly what it was signed for, to limit the arms race for nuclear missiles.
