The first military action of the Cold War, North Korea attacked South Korea across the 38th parallel, an imaginary line separating North Korea (communist) and South Korea (republic). When this happened, the US sent aid to South Korea while the Soviet Union sent aid to North Korea. China got involved as well, mostly, though, beginning when South Korea made it over to the Nothern other side of the 38th parallel.
  • Period: to

    Korean War

This was the war with communist North Korea and democratic South Korea fighting eachother for dominence. This greatly effected the Cold War because it was a military battle of communist versus democratic, with North Korea seeming to represent the Soviet Union and now-communist China and South Korea representing the US and our allies, who also contributed to South Korea.
  • The End of the Korean War

With the death toll rising extrodinarily high, North and South Korea signed a stalemate in which they would keep the 38th parallel to divide the two countries.
They are still divided today; the war didn't really cause any any side to win or lose any, except it did divide the countries further than they were before.

The world's first artificial atellite, this was the official beginning to the international space race fo the U.S. vs. U.S.S.R.
This also lead to the creation of NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) in 1958.
  • Period: to

    The Space Race

The race for spacial supremacy between the US and Soviet Union. This began after the Korean War and with the kick-off of the USSR launching the Sputnick satellite. From 1961 to 1964, NASA's budget was increased almost 500 percent. During this time, the main effort on both sides was to be first on the moon. With Neil Armstrong and the Apollo 11, the US "won" the space race.
  • Explorer I Launched

This was the US's first satellite, changing the tides of the the struggle.
  • NASA Creation

  • U-2 Plane Shot Down

Crafted by the CIA, these planes were made to fly at high altitudes that the CIA assured Pres. These planes weren't supposed to cause any harm, however it did raise alot of suspicions on the USSR side of the Americans.
  • Yuri Gagarin

As the first person to orbit the Earth, traveling i the capsule-like spacecraft Vostok 1, he created an even more heightened frenzy on the American's side to get into space.
  • Alan Shepard

After testing the space craft and chimpanzees, Project Mercury involved a smaller, cone-shaped capsule far lighter than the Vostok 1, which is what the Soviet Union had used to orbit Yuri Gagarin. Then, on May 5, Alan Shepard became the first American in space (though not in orbit).
  • The Berlin Wall goes up

The Berlin wall, dividing East and West Germany and Berlin, was the result of the conflict of post-WWII Germany and the division of it amonst France, Britian, the US, and the USSR. • US Losses during Project Apollo

Three astronauts were killed after their spacecraft caught fire during a launch simulation.
  • Apollo 8 Launch

The first manned space mission to orbit the moon.
