    USA first uses atomic bomb
    The atomic bombings of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan were conducted by the United States during the final stages of World War II in 1945. The name of the bomb was Little Boy
  • Russia vs. Japan

    Russia vs. Japan
    USSR had signed an agreement with the US to enter the Pacific war against Japan in order to get land deals (some of Japan's islands) and loans. The US honored most of the agreement even though US decided to drop the bombs. Russia still owns some of these islands.
    Stalin found out about the A bomb in 1943 and saw the specs from his spies at Los Alamos at this time. He knew about the bomb when he signed the agreement with US.

    The Greek Civil War was fought from 1944 to 1949 between a government backed by British and American support and Greek Communists. American intervention resulted in the Truman Doctrine, the U.S. policy of aiding nations defending themselves against Communist forces.

     Communist takeover in Czechoslovakia
    President Eduard Benes allows a communist-dominated government to be organized. Although the Soviet Union did not physically intervene (as it would in 1968), Western observers decried the virtually bloodless communist coup as an example of Soviet expansion into Eastern Europe.

    The city of Berlin became a centerpiece of the Cold War, playing a particularly significant role in Europe. East met West in this divided city where the Berlin wall was a tangible symbol of the "Iron Curtain."

    The soviets soon realized that their efforts in blockading Berlin were unsuccessful since the British and Americans were flying in supplies, and so the Soviets lifted the blockade in May 1949.

    The Warsaw Pact is the name commonly given to the treaty between Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and the Soviet Union, which was signed in Poland in 1955 and was officially called 'The Treaty of Friendship, Co-operation and Mutual Assistance'. this pact got isolved at the end or the cold war.

    John F. Kennedy elected President
    on the cold war president Kennedy ordered an increase in spending on nuclear missiles that set off an arms race that resulted in America losing its nuclear superiority by the end of the decade. Two years after the construction of the Berlin Wall, President Kennedy paid a historic visit to Berlin to challenge Soviet oppression and offer hope to the people of the divided city.

    Apollo 11 lands on the moon
    The legendary Apollo 11 mission, carrying Neil A. Armstrong, Edwin E. "Buzz" Aldrin, and Michael Collins, began with its launch on July 16, 1969 aboard a Saturn V rocket. After entering lunar orbit, the Lunar Module (Eagle), with Armstrong and Aldrin, separated from the Command/Service Module (Columbia) and began its landing. At 4:17 PM on July 20, 1969, the Lunar Module landed on a lunar plain known as the Sea of Tranquility with an announcement by Armstrong: "Houston, Tranquility Base here."

    BERLIN WALLS FALL
    Berlin had been politically divided since the end of World War II, with the eastern portion of the city serving as the capitol of German Democratic Republic. The two parts of the city were physically divided in 1961 with the construction of the Berlin Wall, the most visible expression of the Cold War. When the Berlin Wall was opened on November 9, 1989 it marked for many the symbolic end of that war.

    The fall of the Soviet Union began to happen when Mikhail Gorbachev came to power. It happened shortly before midnight on March 11, 1985. The Central Committee announced that Mikhail Gorbachev would succeed Konstantin Chernenko, who had been dead for four hours. Gorbachev quickly moved to set him apart from potential rivals, he created a platform.
