  • The Red Scare

    The Red Scare
    After WW1, it became apparent that people in America were turning communist and rebelling against the Capitalists. In April, there were approximately 36 bombs, which were booby-trapped to explode upon opening, mailed to important politicians. When Seattle Mayor Ole Hanson’s bomb failed to explode, the Seattle police informed post offices to keep a look out for the parcels. They recognized 28 of the bombs before they reached their intended target.
  • The USSR is Formed

    The USSR is Formed
    The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was established on 28th of December 1922 and was made up of the countries Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. In 1917 there were two Russian Revolutions which saw two different governments, the first was a provisional government and the second was a communist government, which let to the Bolshevik victory in 1922, when the USSR formed.
  • Bombing of Hiroshima

    Bombing of Hiroshima
    On the 6th of August 1945 Little Boy, the nickname for the atomic bomb, was dropped onto Hiroshima, out of the B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay, piloted by Colonel Paul Tibbets. The atomic bomb killed around 90,000 to 150,000 people, around 80,000 of those in the first day, the rest were over time from injuries, poisoning or cancer.

    Bombing of Nagasaki
    Three days after the dropping of Little Boy, the U.S flew over Fat Boy in the B-29 Bomber Bockscar, piloted by Major Charles Sweeney, and dropped it onto Nagasaki. This time the bomb killed considerably less amount of people, around 40,000 to 45,000 were killed or went missing.
  • NATO is formed

    NATO is formed
    The Northern Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) was established on April the 4th 1949 by 12 western countries, the United States, Great Britain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Iceland, Canada, and Portugal. NATO was a military alliance that were formed to stop any attacks from the Soviet Union (The USSR).
  • The Bay of Pigs Invasion

    The Bay of Pigs Invasion
    The Bay of Pigs Invasion was an unsuccessful attempt by the Cuban Exiles to overthrow the Cuban Government. 1300 Cuban exiles, which were armed with U.S weapons, landed in the Bay of Pigs on the southern coast of Cuba. The Cuban exiles were badly outnumbered by the Cuban troops and after less than 24 hours of fighting the Cuban exiles surrendered.
  • The Berlin Wall is Erected

    The Berlin Wall is Erected
    Just after 12 o'clock at night on the 13th of August 1961, while most of everyone in Berlin was asleep, soldiers, trucks and construction workers drove through East Berlin. They found all the streets that went into West Berlin and started tearing them up, placing concrete poles into the holes. They then strung barbwire all across the border. Finally they cut the phone lines between East and West Berlin, making sure that you couldn't contact anyone on the opposite side.
  • The Cuban Missile Crisis

    The Cuban Missile Crisis
    The Soviet Field Commanders in Cuba were prepared to use nuclear weapons to defend their island against invasion and the U.S were more prepared than ever. Thankfully two brave men, President John F. Kennedy and Premier Nikita Khrushchev, the war was averted. The Cuban Missile Crisis was the closest the world ever came to nuclear war.
  • The Fall of the Berlin Wall

    The Fall of the Berlin Wall
    The fall of the Berlin Wall was just as sudden as the rise of it. When Communism began to falter in Poland, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia during 1988 and 1989, new exit points were opened to people in East Berlin who wanted to flee into West Berlin. Suddenly on the 9th of November 1989 East Berlin government official Günter Schabowski announced, "permanent relocation can be done at any of the border checkpoints". Slowly the Berlin Wall was chipped and torn away until it was gone.
  • The USSR Breaks Up

    The USSR Breaks Up
    On the 8th of December 1991 the presidents of Belarus, Ukraine and Russia sign the Belavezha Accords declaring The Soviet Union has dissolved. But the USSR did not finally dissolve until the 21st of December 1991 when all of the Soviet Republics signed the Alma-Ata Protocol, which confirmed their agreement to the Belavezha Accords.
