    The United States drops its first atomic bomb of the cold war on Hiroshima. About 66,000 people were killed at the bombing of Hiroshima. The population was about 225,000.Not everyone died on the first day of the bombing, others died in the next few months.
  • War on Japan.

    War on Japan.
    On the 8th of August the Soviet Union declared war on Japan. It was the next day that the soviets landed in North Korea. The defeat of Japan's Kwantung Army was a major part of the war on japan.
  • Japanese surrender.

    The end of the Second World War came when the Japanese surrendered on the 14th of August 1945. The Japanese navy could not do a thing to stop the invasion by the Allied forces.
  • The Iron Curtain speech.

    On March the 5th 1946, Winston Churchill delivered his now famous speech “The Iron Curtain speech”. Originally the The Sinews of Peace. It came to be called “The Iron Speech” because it proclaimed that an Iron Curtain has settled between the Capitalists and the Communists. The speech was mainly to out line the “special relationship” between Britain and The United States. The speech was delivered at Westminster collage to an audience of about 40,000 people.
  • NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

    NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
    The treaty was signed on the 9th of April 1949. It was made up off 12 nations who were all to small to stop the spread of Communist globally. NATO made a force of nuclear weapons to stop the invasion of the communists. NATO's weapons rendered the Communists weapons futile .After the cold war ended NATO was turned from a military force in to a political force.
  • Berlin blockade ends.

    The Berlin blockade started on June the 24th 1948 and finished May 12 1949. The blockade was one of the first mayor cold war problems, it blocked the Allies rail rode, rode’s and cannel systems to a part of Berlin under their control. The Allies had to fly supply’s to the forces in Berlin.

    During March in the year 1954 the KGB became part of nearly every part of life in the Soviet Union. The KGB was the security force of the Soviet Union. They were the border guards, military cops and got intelligence about other countries. They also had many other roles but they were the main three.
  • Sputnik

    Sputnik was the first global orbiting satellite. it was launched on October 1st by the Soviet space program. it was a major part of the space race that went on through the cold war.
  • SALT 1

    SALT 1
    SALT was the Strategic Arms limitation Treaty. Meetings started in 1969 and finished in 1972. The treaty made it so that there was a limit on which types of key weapons could be used.
  • The Berlin wall falls.

    On the 9th of November 1989 the berlin wall fell. The Berlin wall was a key part of the cold war, it was a symbal of the Communists and Capitalists regions. It stretched from east Germany and ended in Berlin.
