    The first Liberator Newspaper is published
    On January 1st 1831 William Loyd Garrison, a white abolitionist, took a stand by creating The Liberator. A while later in 1833 Garrison met with leaders from all around the nation to attempt to form the American Anti-slave Association. The Liberator wouldn't have made it very long if it weren't for the free colored people who subscribed, which took up almost 75% of the Liberators readers. The Liberator also called for a immediate release of all slaves instead of a gradual release of slaves.

    On January 29 1850 senator Henry Clay from Kentucky sent up the compromise of 1850. The compromise of 1850 suggested that California become a free state but any other states that are added have no limits on slavery. Though the compromise itself wast adopted it was turned into smaller parts and later adopted
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin was published

    Uncle Tom's Cabin was published
    On March 20th 1852 Harriet Beecher Stowe published the book Uncle Tom's Cabin, a book that portrayed slavery as it really was. President Abraham Lincoln once told Stowe "So your the little woman who wrote the book that made this great war." Stowe's book sold over 300,000 copies in just the north and sold even more in Great Britain. It was also credited to the beginning of the Civil War.
  • Kansas - Nebraska act passed

    Kansas - Nebraska act passed
    in 1854 senator Stephen A. Douglas from Illinois sent in a bill meant to settle slavery. His plan was to take the region west of Missouri and Iowa as the territories of Kansas and Nebraska. The 2 states were above the 36, 30 line so he decided to use what he called popular sovereignty to decide of it was a free or slave state.

    In the election of 1856 the democratic party decided to nominate James Buchanan. James Buchanan was also previously a diplomat and member of Congress. Buchanan tried to appeal to southern whites and endorsed the idea of popular sovereignty.

    On March 3rd 1857 Dred Scott went to the U.S. Supreme Court because he thought he should be free. He went to fight for his freedom under the grounds his owner brought him into a free state for a extended period of time. Thought Dred Scott didn't obtain his freedom he was later purchased and released by his previous owner after his current owner had died
  • John Brown's Raid at Harper's Ferry

    John Brown's Raid at Harper's Ferry
    The Abolitionist John Brown lead a small group to a weapons facility in Harper's Ferry, Virginia to try and start a revolt against slavery. They left on October 16 1859 and were able to take control of it but by October 19 1859 he was overrun and 10 of his men were killed including two of he dear sons. Jown himself was found guilty or murder and treason on November 2nd and was killed on December 2nd the very same year.

    Lincoln won the presidency against John Bell, John Breckenridge, and Stephen Douglas. Lincoln was president during the Civil War a war against the north and south parts of america. Although the north won the war Lincoln dint win in the end because he was assassinated.

    On December 20th 1860 South Carolina decided to be the first state to secede from the Union followed by 10 other states. The southerns states that seceded named themselves the Confederate States of America while the other 21 states from the north stayed as the Union. The 5 border states of Missouri, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware allowed were in a neutral ground being still part of the Union and also allowing slavery.

    on April 6th 1862 a Union army led by General Grant camped out at Shiloh church 20 miles from Corinth. Some additional forces joined Grant from Nashville, and because of this the Confederates decided to attack before the army got too big. early April 6th Albert Sydney Johnston led the confederate army on a surprise attack. though the Union won it didn't come without many losses.

    The battle of fort Sumter was the first major battle of the civil war. The confederate forces bombarded the unfinished fort on the harbor of Charleston. After the battle of fort Sumter south Virginia was attacked by a number of similar siege like attacks.

    On July 21st 161 the Union and Confederates battled at Manassas Junction Virginia and lasted 2 days. The battle got its name when 35000 Union troop attacked 20000 Confederate troops near a small river called Bull Run. The northern civilians were so confident some of them picnicked and watched the battle but later had to run because the north was losing.

    The battle of Antietam occurred on September 22 1862 and was also called the battle of sharpsburg. The battle pitted the north Virginia against the potamic forces. The battle was known as one of the deadliest battles ever and was vital to shaping Americas future.

    On December 13th 1862 during the battle of Fredricksburg the most people ever to fight in a battle fought. The confederates decided to attack at a 2 prong strategy. after the confederates attacked from 2 sides from around 60,000 troops per side which ended with a southern win.

    The emancipation proclamation was a proclamation that said all slaves in the southerns states would be free. the proclamation influenced roughly 3.5 million slaves and make them free people. The emancipation proclamation did not free all slaves rather the slaves that were in the rebelling states as to not lose the border states.

    The battle of Chancellorsville was considered confederate general Robert E Lee's best victory in the course of the whole war. Lee was greatly outnumbered almost 2 to 1 but decided to split his army in two and put up a surprise attack that won him the battle. One of Lee's most trusted general Thomas "stonewall" Jackson was wounded do to friendly fire.

    Vicksburg surrendering was one of the final battles in the Vicksburg campaign. when the north captured Vicksburg it would have completed 2 thirds of the anaconda plan. the battle of Vicksburg was considered the turning point of the war.

    The Sherman march to the sea was a campaign through Georgia that ended on December 21st. The campaign started in the captured city of Atlanta and ended with the the capture of the Savannah port. They were moving under a scorched earth tactic which meant they cut off resources and industry while moving in which caused the south to suffer later.

    the battle of Appomattox courthouse was the end of the war and ended with the south surrendering. IN a battle right before the court case the south tried to attack the north but was forced to surrender because of underestimating their forces. the confederates thought the union only had some light artillery but tried to fight against heavy artillery and cavalry where they were forced to surrender ending the war.

After a union victory at Chancellorsville general Robert E Lee marched his forces into Pennsylvania for another battle. After days of fighting and many deaths Lee's arms was forced to retreat or face utter defeat.
