  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    The Sugar Act stated that colonists would have to pay a tax for sugary goods such as syrups and molasses. The act was passed to offset the cost of the French and Indian War. This was the first time a direct tax was laid on the colonies directly from the British Parliment.
  • Quartering Act

    Quartering Act
    King George III sent soldiers to the colonies to protect against threats from Frenchman and Native Americans, along with protecting his colonial interest. The Quartering Act allowed British soldiers could live in colonists' houses. Refusal to provide board was punishable by law. The act allowed King George III to keep order in the colonies through information from the soldiers.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    The Stamp Acts said that colonists must pay tax for stamps on a variety of documents. It impacted almost all colonists and was the only tax in which individual colonists had to pay themselves. The money collected helped contribute to defray the cost of protecting the British colonies. As the British citizens where paying similar taxes, the Prime Minister felt it was fair.
  • Townshend Act

    Townshend Act
    Charles Townshend, the British Chancellor of the Exchequer (treasury), believed that the British government had the right to tax goods that were imported into the colonies. The Townshend Act allowed law enforcers to enter without permission to search for illegal goods. This act was passed to keep colonists from smuggling goods, which was an issue considering the anger colonists had toward the taxation.
  • Tea Act

    Tea Act
    The Parliment revoked taxes on imported goods, excluding the East India Company. The company provided tea, which was popular and in high demand. The Tea Act made colonists pay a tax for the tea, as well as granting the East India Company a monopoly. The British Parliment hoped to help the company, as it was in economic trouble.
  • Boston Port Act

    Boston Port Act
    The Boston Port Act stated that you must now obtain permission to dock at Boston Harbour; therefore, all goods coming into Boston were approved by the crown. The act allowed Britain to gain more control over the colonies. This was important, as the crown had started to realize he was losing control after the Boston Tea Party. The act is a section of the Coercive Acts, or what the colonists called the Intolerable Acts.
  • MA Government Act and Administration of Justice Act

    MA Government Act and Administration of Justice Act
    The acts were part of the Intolerable/Coercive Acts. They stated that colonists may not form meetings without permission from the government. The acts were created to gain control over the colonies after the Boston Tea Party, and punish Massachusetts.
  • Quebec Act

    Quebec Act
    Quebec would be annexed to Newfoundland because of the Quebec Act. This act affected the British citizens who lived in the province of Quebec. The act was passed to gain control over the people of Quebec.
