The British Acts

  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    The act said that trade would be better secured, and that any form of sugar would be taxed for someone to even get it off of the ship. It was passed to pay the debt from the French and Indian War. This act took place in the Colonies.
  • The Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act
    The act said that any official papers that needed to be stamped had to be taxed. It was passed to try to make the British citizens and the Colonists equal. This took place in the Colonies, but this act was also passed to tax the Colonists.
  • Quartering Act

    Quartering Act
    The Quartering Act said that if there wasn't enough room in the barracks, the soldiers had to get food and shelter in the homes of the colonists. If the colonists refused, they had to pay a criminal fine. This act was passed to make sure all the soldiers had room.
  • The Townshend Act

    The Townshend Act
    The Townshend Act said that any goods that were imported and imported through British ships had to be taxed. This was passed to stop smuggling, but it may have influenced the Colonists to smuggle more goods. This took place on the East Coast and in most ports there.
  • The Tea Act

    The Tea Act
    The Tea Act said that there will be smaller taxes on tea that was from the East Indian Company, and you had to pay the tax, along with the original payment to get the tea. This act was passed to stop the smuggling of tea into the Colonies and to ease tension between the colonies. This act made it easier for the East Indian Tea Company to export and import things between the Colonies and Britain.

    The Quebec Act says that all territories of Quebec now belong to the King. All the French Colonists have to pay taxes now to the King. The Quebec Act took place in the Western part of the US.
  • Coercive/Intolerable Acts: Boston Port Act

    The Boston Port Act said that no one shall go near the port until all the damage was payed for. Boston would be punished for destroying British property during the Boston Tea Party. This took place in Boston, Massachusetts.

    Coercive/Intolerable Acts: MA Government Act and the Administration of Justice Act
    The Government Act said that you cannot officially meet unless it is approved by the governor. The Justice act says that if any capital offence is made, they shall be tried in court before the King, and not under the Colonists version of punishment. This includes murder, suing, and other offences.
