Aug 29, 1949 The Soviets experiment with their first atomic bomb. Oct 7, 1949 The Federal Republic of Germany is founded. (West Germany) Aug 13, 1961 The Berlin sectorial border between East and West Berlin is closed, barriers are built. Aug 21, 1961 The United States sends troops to West Berlin. Aug 26, 1961 All crossing points are closed for West Berlin citizens. Aug 15, 1962 The Berlin Wall is built The first barrier of barbed wire for the Berlin Wall is built. Jun 26, 1963 John F. Kennedy visits West Berlin and gives his "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech. Sep 29, 1971 West Berlin and East Berlin allow imports and exports between the two sides.
