John Scopes, a teacher in the Tennessee Public School system, went on trial for teaching evolution in his classroom. This was know as the Scopes Monkey Trial. Because of the "Tennessee Butler Act" it was unlawful to teach human evolution in a public funded school.
Scopes was defended by the famous American lawyer, Clarence Darrow, who was a leading member of the American Civil Liberties Union. Scopes was found guilty and ordered to pay a fine of $100. -
Charles Lindbergh completed the first solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. He flew nonstop from Long Island, New York to Paris, France in his plane name "The Spirit of St. Louis."

The Jazz Singer, a musical film starring Al Jolson, was released in 1927. It was the first talking feature length film with synchronized dialogue. This was the beginning of "talkies" and the end of the silent film era.

Seven Irish members of Chicago's North Side Gang, led by George "Bugs" Moran were lined up and executed on St Valentine's Day in 1929. They were murdered by four unknown individuals, in which two were dressed as policemen. It was suspected that Al Capone was behind the attack, brought on by rivalries between the gangs, stemming from their involvement in various illegal activities. It remains one of the biggest unsolved crimes in American history.
