    Battle of Bunker Hill continued
    The Americans had very little ammunition, so they knew that every shot had to be very accurate. American commander even gave them order that they should not fire until they could see the white of their eyes. Although almost all of the fighting took place on Breed’s Hill it is known as the battle of Bunker Hill. Even though more than 1000 British were killed or wounded and only about 450 Americans killed or wounded the British still claimed victory as the Americans retreated.

    The battle of Bunker Hill took place near Boston, Massachusetts, in June 1775, was significant because of the high cost paid in human lives by both the British and American sides as one of the best conflicts in the American Revolution. British general Tomas Gage ordered his troops to set up cannons on Dorchester heights. (A high point just outside of Boston.) After American colonel William Prescott led 1,200 solders to Breed’s Hill (in Pennsylvania) and dug trenches to prepare for their defense.

Ten day later admiral lord Richard Howe arrived with additional forces. Over a period of a few weeks the British army grew about 30000 men when Washington had arrived to New York.

    In effort to defeat New York Washington moved about 19000 troops south to long island. As the new members of the navy proved no match for Howe’s professional solders. Just to say that Washington had no navy to challenge the British in the New York harbor. He tried to find out where the British troops would come ashore he just sent 10000 of his troops to long island and the rest to Manhattan. On august 27, 1776 Howe choose to land at long island.

Following the retreat of George Washington's Continental Army northward from New York City, British General William Howe landed troops in Westchester County, intending to cut off Washington's escape route. About 1450 Americans against about 1300 British and German troops.

Howe's troops drove Washington's troops from a hill near the village; following this loss, Washington ordered the Americans to retreat farther north. Later British movements chased Washington across New Jersey and into Pennsylvania. Then that started the battle of Trenton.

    The Americans drove the British out of Princeton before Cornwallis had a chance to return to defend his team. As Cornwallis returned to the city, Washington decided it was best to remove his team from Princeton and move his troops to Morristown. After the battle, Cornwallis abandoned many of his posts in New Jersey, and ordered his army to retreat to New Brunswick.

They ran short on food, and the days were getting cooler.

Militia soldiers entering camp helped by doing much of the heavy work, leaving the continental (regular) soldiers less tired. The Americans also had more supplies than the British.

British general Cornwallis didn’t show instead he had named general Charles O’Hara’s to act at his place. So then General Washington selected General Benjamin Lincoln to represent the Americans.
