    U2 Spy Plane Scandal -Francis Gary Powers was shot down while flying a U2 reconnaissance plane
    -He was 1,200 miles into Soviet Russia airspace, near Sverdlousk
    -It was unknown whether or not the plane was shot down by a surface to air missile, or if it was forced down by mechanical problems
    -This incodent sparked a verbal battle between USSR and US
    -The US exchanged Colonel Rudolph Ivanovich in return for Powers
  • Rise of Berlin Wall

    Rise of Berlin Wall
    Rise of Berlin Wall -East Berlin was controlled by Russians
    -West Berlin was controlled by Americans, British and French
    -The communist goverment in East Germany built a 2 metre high wall between East and West Berlin
    -The Berlin wall stretched 42 kilometres through the city
    -Many famillies were divided by this barrier
    -Armed border guards patrolled the wall
    -171 people were killed or died attempting to escape the Berlin wall

    -It was designed to observe the outer layer of the Earths atmosphere.
    -Aloutte II followed in 1965 to carry on the work in the iono sphere.
    -Canada and several other nations launched the first intelsat satellite (Intelsat- International telocommunications satellite organization)

    Cuban Missile crisis -Russia and America began by spying on each other
    -Both built up huge arsenals of weapons
    -Americans placed nuclear missiles in Turkey aimed at Moscow
    -Russians were building nuclear missile launch pads in Cuba aimed at US
    -Cubans believed that America was planning to attack the island
    -The Cuban government asked Russia to help them by sending military aid.

    -President Kennedy announced an American Naval blockade
    -Informed of Kennedys intentions only one and a half hours in advance the issue for the canadian government was whether to comply with an American request to move Canadian forces to an alert status known as "Defcon 3"
    -JFK was upset with the ignorance -This was very unappreciated by JFK and stirred up a bit of conflict.

    Man Lands On Moon -Neil Armstrong and "Buzz" Aldrin became the first men to walk on the moon
    -The moon was covered in greyish brown dust
    -Armstrong declared: ''Thats one small step for man, and one giant leap for man kind''
    The flight took up to four days often travelling 40,000 kilometres p/h
