On September 6, 1901, President McKinley was shot in Buffalo while Teddy Roosevelt was speaking in Vermont. McKinley died on the 14 and Roosevelt was sworn into office.

The Coal Strike was a strike put on by the mine workers of America in the anthracite coalfields of eastern Pennsylvania. Miners striked for higher wages, shorter workdays, and the recognition of their union. The strike threatened to shut down the winter fuel supply to major American cities.

The Elkins Act was signed by president Roosevelt, the act authorized the Interstate Commerce Commission to impose heavy fines on railroads that offered rebates, and upon the shippers that accepted these rebates.

The Devils Tower was the first named national monument by Teddy Roosevelt. It stands 1,267 feet above the Belle Fourche River. From the summit to the base it stands 867 feet. The summit is 5,112 feet above sea level.
