    Rough Rider at San Juan Hill

    The Rough Riders sought after San Juan hill in 1898. Teddy instantly stepped down from his position and formed a force with volunteers to protect San Juan Hill. The Rough Riders enlisted cowboys and men led by Teddy and put under the control of Leonard Wood. When arrived in Cuba, they immediately charged up the hill to battle. The volunteers were joined by the 10th Negro Calvary to help charge.

    The popular President William McKinley was shot at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo. His vice president, Theodore Roosevelt, was in Vermont at a speaking engagement. Over the next period, McKinley's health declined until he finally passed on September 14th. The next day, Teddy Roosevelt was named president of the United States.

    The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 prohibited the sale of misbranded or altered food and drugs in the interstate commerce. This was the country's first consumer protection agency, the FDA( Food and Drug Administration). The same day Theordore Roosevelt made the Federal Meat Inscpedction Act. The first federal law regulating food and drugs.

    President Roosevelt brought a spotlight to Devil's Tower by passing the Antiques Act, giving the president power to set aside national monuments. Devil's Tower was the first national monument of many to come.

    Leaves presidency, visits Africa

    Roosevelt left New York to go to Africa on March 14, 1910. He traveled through Britain, East Africa, Belgium, Congo, and Sudan. The expedition ends in Khartoum, and Sudan having acquired thousands of natural specimens.
