  • Horace Mann's Life

    Horace Mann's Life
I know, not a specific event, but I do think that what he was able to accomplish set the foundation for everything we know today. Mann promoted a public school that was funded by the people for the people. With this idea, the first bricks are laid for the creation of our nationwide public education system. Well done Mr. Mann. (pg. 127-128)
  • The Cardinal Principles of 1918

    The Cardinal Principles of 1918
This document called for the expansion of the high school curriculum to be more inclusive of other areas of study. This idea was to prepare high school students for not only college specifically but life and work as well. This gave birth to the modern high school formula we've come accustomed to. (pg. 142)
  • Brown v Board of Education.

    Brown v Board of Education.
The ruling of this case allowed for desegregation of schools. Allowing no longer a 'separate but equal' approach adopted in Plessy v Ferguson. Brown v Board overturned that ruling and paved the way for interracial schools. (pg. 151-152)
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

Education for All Handicapped Children Act
In 1975 congress passed this act to ensure that students with disabilities were given access and the opportunity to learn their basic education. This opened an avenue to further be all inclusive in public education and spawned special education programs that have been the savior for many students. Later reformations were added to further assistance for disabled learners. (pg. 159)
  • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind
This act held schools accountable for the testing of every individual student and for the district to hire capable teachers trained in their fields. Setting a national standard helped bring the lower portion into better academic standing. Requiring every student to be efficient in reading, math, and science at grade level. (pg. 164-165)
