    Battle of Little Bighorn

    This battle took place between 1876 and 1877. The battle was between the Sioux tribe and a division of the 7th Cavalry Regiment. At first, the Sioux won by killing over 200 men, but then backup was called and the Sioux were outnumbered and ended up surrendering.
  • Bison Population

    In the early 80s, the Bison populations were only a few hundred whereas before they flourished in millions. This is from overhunting in the region.
  • Railroad

    In 1880, there were hundreds of thousands of men who worked in the railroad industry. This accounted for nearly 2.5% of the nation's workforce. However, lots of these companies relied on immigrants to do the work. They were paid poorly and worked under dangerous conditions.
  • Buffalo Bill

    Buffalo Bill began his touring show in 1883 while he was in Omaha, Nebraska. Cody did not like the word "show" because he felt like it made the wild west look like it was different than it actually was.
  • Dawes General Allotment Act

    This act was passed allowing natives 4 years to claim up to 160 acres. They could hold this land for 25 years minimum without selling the land. Any single person over 18 was given 80 acres, and each orphan was given 40 acres. The rest of the lands that were unclaimed were changed back to federal lands and were sold to settlers.

  • Native American Death

    After a group of agents started arresting Lakota leaders, something went wrong and Sitting Bull as well as other tribal leaders were killed. This event causes other tribes to leave the area. A couple of weeks later, and an American Calvary unit finds a group of 350 Lakotas. They were escorted to Wounded Knee where they would later be frisked down in search of weapons. They did not want to be searched, a shot rang out, and nearly all of the Indians were killed. Only a dozen Americans were killed.
  • How the Other Half Lives

    This book titled "How the Other Half Lives" was published in 1890 and was meant to show everything about the slums of the cities from working conditions, to living conditions. This was all meant for the people who did not live there. This book caused a housing reform in New York as well as other cities.
  • National Association of Colored Women

    This association advocated for the sufferage of women, in particular colored women, and their rights. This group, along with others, were usually comprised mostly of upper-class women who were fairly educated.
  • Lacey Act

    This act banned the shipment of any kind of animal that was killed illegally across state lines. This act was created because of pressure from society to protect the wildlife and prevent manufacturers from making garments from nearly whole animals and rare animals.
