  • Minimum Wage

    President Eisenhower increases minimum wage from $0.75 to $1.00 per hour.
  • Rosa Parks Arrest

    Rosa Parks, A black women, was arrested for refusing to give up her set on a city bus to a white man in Montgomery, Alabama. This event was the cause of the Montgomery bus boycott and was a turning point the the African-American struggle for freedom.
  • Interstate Highway System

    President Eisenhower signs the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956, which will create the Interstate Highway system. It was one of the biggest public works projects in U.S. history.
  • Little Rock Desegregation

    Federal Troops are sent Little Rock, Arkansas by President Eisenhower to enforce the court-ordered desegregation of the city's public schools. Because of this, nine African American students were allowed to attend at Little Rock Central High School.
  • Lunch Counter Sit-Ins

    At a restaurant called Woolworth's in Charlotte, North Carolina, Black students protested segregation by preforming a sit-in at the lunch counter. The movement spreads across the South in the weeks that follow.
  • JFK Become President

    John F. Kennedy becomes the youngest President of the U.S. and beats Richard Nixon in the close election.
  • The Start of The Vietnam War.

    In Vietnam, an American serviceman was killed and becomes the first combat death reported. For many Americans, the death will mark the beginning of the Vietnam War.
  • MLK March on Washington

    It was a Hugh protest march for jobs and freedom when some 250,000 people gathered in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. There MLK delivered his famous "I Have A Dream Speech."
  • Kennedy's Assassination

    President John F. Kennedy is shot in the head and killed while riding in a motorcade through Dallas, Texas. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson had to take the role of presidency.
  • MLK Assassination

    Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee by James Earl Ray. James pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 99 years in prison.
  • Nixon Became President

    Republican Richard Nixon becomes the 37th President of the United States.
  • Watergate

    At the Watergate hotel in Washington, D.C., five men are caught burglarizing the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee. Their arrests set into motion the events that eventually resulted in the resignation of President Nixon.
  • The End of The Vietnam War for The U.S.

    The Vietnam War is officially over for the United States. Over 3 million Americans served in the war, nearly 60,000 died, some 150,000 were wounded, and at least 1,000 were missing in action.
