Teaching With(out) Technology

  • Period: to

    Fall 2013

Students had no use of technology constantly available. I had a laptop to use in my room, as well as a projector that I could hook my laptop up to in order to share videos, interactives, etc. Computer labs were available, but we had about 30 computers to share between 400 students
  • Period: to

    Spring 2014

Computer labs got some new working computers, which offered more availability, but not much. Still hardly used technology with students. Teachers were given iPads in addition to their laptop. When using technology in the room, it was all teacher directed and for whole class use.
  • Period: to

    Fall 2014

I had the same amount of technology as the previous year. I tried to use iPad more for small groups and stations. Students were allowed to control the iPad if they were working at a station that was using it.
  • Period: to

    Spring 2015

New computers in the library, still hard to find available time, but definitely made for more availability. Started making online tests, so students would take their unit tests on the computer. First year of computerized PARCC - because of the lack of computers, it took us one month of school for everyone to finish!
  • Period: to

    August 2015

Found out we would be moving towards 1:1 in the near future. The plan was originally to have 6th grade start with them the following year, then add another class set for the next two years until all 3 grades had Chromebooks.
  • Period: to

    November 2015

Every teacher got a Chromebook to start learning how to navigate, which gave every class 2 laptops and an iPad. I began using all three for different centers. Students would watch videos in small groups then answer questions as a group. 1 class per grade-level team had a class set of Chromebooks to use, but these were only kept to that one teacher.
  • Period: to

    February 2016

All classes had a set of Chromebooks to stay in the classroom. It felt as if we went from hardly no technology to tons of technology over night! I continued my online tests, and began online quizzes as well. My students and I were learning together on how to use technology in class. My students this year were my guinea pigs so I could try out different apps and websites to explore what was out there.
  • Period: to

    May 2016

We found out we had the funds to completely go 1:1 the following year.
  • Period: to

    Summer 2016

I attended technology workshop to learn more about using tech in the classroom. I was able to have conversations with many educators who were already using technology, and was given many great ideas to play around with & explore over the summer. I began working to revise old lessons to incorporate technology. Instead of the original note-taking that I have done, I made plans for students to be able to explore websites, watch videos, complete interactives that allowed them to take notes.
  • Period: to

    Fall 2016 - Present

I am continuing to work on revising lessons to get my students using more technology. I use Schoology as an LMS, where my students have access to everything we cover in a unit. They are beginning to become more resourceful with their use of technology instead of relying on me to help them, which allows them to be more independent thinkers. I have come a long way since the beginning, but know there is still work to do!
