  • Rough rider at San Juan Hill

    Rough rider at San Juan Hill
    Roosevelt participated in the Spanish-American War as a "Rough Rider" by assisting in Cuba's liberation from Spain. The Battle of San Juan Hill was one of the last battles in the war and was one of the most significant U.S. land victories.
  • TR 1st time named President

    TR 1st time named President
    Roosevelt originally took office as vice president alongside William McKinley. Teddy Roosevelt only back president after McKinley was assassinated the following September at age 42. This incident would make TR president.
  • Coal strike

    Coal strike
    This was the first labor dispute in which Roosevelt intervened as a neutral arbitrator. Roosevelt invited both strikers and workers to the White House and threatened to send in the army to overlook the mines if they didn't come to a conclusion.This coal strike resulted in nine-hour workdays from ten hours.
  • National Reclamation Act

    National Reclamation Act
    This Act required that water users repay construction costs from which they received benefits. Reclamation projects were essentially irrigation projects and this concept was that irrigation would "reclaim" arid lands for human use.
  • Elkins Act passed

    Elkins Act passed
    This act prevented large corporations, specifically railroad corporations from undercutting the competition, so both the buyers and sellers became liable under the law.
  • Northern security cases

    This was the first example of Roosevelt's use of anti-trust legislation to dismantle a monopoly. In this case, it was against a holding company controlling the principal railroad lines from Chicago to the Pacific Northwest.
  • TR wins first full term as President

    TR wins first full term as President
    Roosevelt began running for presidency following William McKinley's assassination. Roosevelt also was involved in backdoor politicking by seeking a public endorsement from a potential rival, Mark Hanna, and although he didn't get a good statement of support it ultimately didn't matter because Hanna ended dying which cleared the way for TR's nomination. This became the first time that a president not originally elected to the office succeeded in retaining the presidency.

    Yosemite under Federal Control
    TR already loved all things natural and with his private tour with John Muir who was very active with all things conservation. They both bonded over the several-day experiences which led the president to sign the American Antiquities Act which put Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove under federal protection.

    Following the release of a book called The Jungle which went into depth on the unsanitary conditions of meat packaging areas, the Meat Inspection Act was put into motion. Teddy Roosevelt made sure that all meat sold commercially be inspected and passed to ensure that it is safe to be consumed.

    Passage of Pure Food and Drug Act
    Their main purpose was to ban foreign and interstate traffic in adulterated or mislabeled food and drug products and it directed the U.S. Bureau of Chemistry to inspect products and refer offenders to prosecutors.

    Roosevelt went to Africa hunting for the purpose of collecting specimens for the Smithsonian's new Natural History Museum which is now the National Museum of Natural History.

    The Bull-Moose Party which is just a progressive party was formed by Roosevelt in order to unseat the current president at the time, William Howard Taft.
