  • Potty Trained

    Potty Trained
Taylor is finally potty trained, although with a random "accident" while playing or at night. It was a lengthy process, but her pediatrician and most pediatricians believe it is best to be patient with the children in potty training (pp.183-184). She wore "training pants" for about 6 months after she was fully trained, just to be on the safe side.
  • Taylor's first tooth

    Taylor's first tooth
Although babies teeth have begun to grow underneath their gums after they are born, they do not have any visible teeth at the time of birth. The average age for infants to have their first tooth appear is between 5 and 9 months (pp 130). Some babies experience constant pain while others are lucky and have no discomfort or pain at all.
  • Started Walking

    Started Walking
Taylor starting crawling at a 6/7 months, but starting walking shortly after at only 9 months old. This is earlier than the average baby to start walking pertaining to The Gross Motor Development chart- where the average age a baby starts walking without support is 12 months (181-182). Since she has started walking, the house has been "baby proofed."
  • Taylor is now a big Sister

Taylor is now a big Sister
Taylor became a big sister to Kaley. It took her quite a bit to get used to not having all of the attention, but overall she did pretty well adapting to having another sibling in the family. Often, following the birth of a younger sibling, toddler's attachment to the mother goes from secure to insecure, as they feel threatened by all the attention towards the new sibling (pp 218-219). I tried hard to make sure Taylor did not feel insecure with the attention sharing, between her and
    her sister.
  • Preschool

    Preschool
Taylor started preschool this year. She was so excited to start to learn, make friends and play. Attending preschool has many benefits including: Cognitive ( verbal, memory and listening), Social (independent and socially confident) (pp. 246-247). Taylor has been doing great since starting preschool, she has learned to love to read many more books and loves to play games and entertain in silly ways.
  • Softball

    Softball
Taylor joined her first sports team, softball. She absolutely loves it, and is quite good at throwing and hitting the ball. In middle childhood gross motor development advances, their balance improves, coordination advances and they also have greater agility so that they can move more quickly and precisely (pp. 291).
  • Taylor gets glasses

    Taylor gets glasses
Taylor's teachers expressed their concern about Taylor possibly not having the best eye sight. We took her into the eye doctor and were told that Taylor would need to wear prescription glasses to correct her nearsightedness. During middle childhood sight is more likely to get worse for children (pp. 286-287). Myopia, also known as being nearsighted, rises sharply in middle chilhood.
  • Taylor's parents divorce

    Taylor's parents divorce
Taylor's parents finalized their divorce. Since the divorce Taylor has started to act out, especially at home. She throws temper tantrums and has aquired quite a little attitude with things. Research shows that not all children will act negatively towards divorce, but that family process needs to be focused on during times like these(pp 317-318). This includes focusing on things like the quality of the relationships between family members before, during, and after the divorce.
  • First bra - puberty

    First bra - puberty
We bought Taylor her first bra today, as she asked for it and we agreed that it was time for the addition to her wardrobe. The word "puberty" is derived from the Latin word "pubescere," which means "to grow hairy." (pp. 342-343). Taylor also asked if she could shave her legs, because her friends were starting too, we discused this and decided that it was not that time yet, as her hair she thought was visibile was still barely peach fuzz on her legs.
  • Social Cognition

    Social Cognition
Taylor's transition into high school was a bit stressful for her. It was then where she said she was getting comments and little insults from her peers and friends that were not that nice. She started to become a bit whiny and was worring way too much about what others thought. She was starting to use the phrase "No one understands me or what I'm going through" alot! This is called the Phersonal Fable phase- where one is more worried and concerned about what others think of them (pp 359.)
