    Brown vs. Board of Education
    This was important because it was the first case that the supreme court ruled that racial segregation was unconstitutional. This was the first time that the Federal government advocated for students to no longer be victim of inequality and prejudice in schools. This case opened the doors for equality for students with disabilities.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    Elementary and Secondary Education Act
    This event was important because it was implimented to secure equal educational opportunities to students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
    This act included a grant program which encouraged states to create and improve programs for students with disabilities. This was the first program of it's kind,
  • Mills v. Board of Education of District of Columbia

    Mills v. Board of Education of District of Columbia
    This case was the result of handicapped children being excluded from school. The result of the case was that the state must supply "adequate alternative education services as well as prior hearing and periodic review of the childs status, progress, and the adequacy of any educational alternative." This case secured an appropriate education fot students with disabilities in the case they were expelled.
  • Vocational Rehabilitation Act

    Vocational Rehabilitation Act
    A federal law that authorizes the formula grant programs for vocational rehabilitation, supported employment, independent living, and client assistance. It also authorizes a variety of training and service discretionary grants administered by the Rehabilitation Services Administration. This was important because it opened the door for individuals with disabilities to get help with their disabilities.

    Educational Amendments Act
    This act was important because it granted federal funds to states for programming for exceptional learners.It provided the first federal funding for programs who provide services to exceptional learners. And it granted students and families the right of due process in special education placement. This was the first Act that was aimed strictly towards protecting indivuduals with disabilities in the classroom.

    The Education for All Handicapped Children Act
    This public law required schools to ensure that all children, regardless of their disability, to recieve a free and appropriate public education. This act was important because it required schools to offer a free education which was of a comperable quality to nondisabled individuals and deemed any segregation for disabilities as unconstitutional.

    Board of Education of Hendrick Hudson Central School district v. Rowley
    This was an important event because it elaborated upon the definition of a free and appropriate public education. In this case, the court ruled that P.L. 94-142 requires states to provide sufficient but not the best possible support for students to benefit from a public education at a level typical of that of nondisabled peers.

    Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
    This event is important because IDEA was designed to ensure that children with disabilities be granted a free appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment .IDEA ensures children with disabilities receive appropriate special education services. It prepares children with disabilities for employment and independent living. It protects the rights of children with disabilities and their families. And it ensures institutions are providing services to persons with disabilities.

    No Child Left Behind
    This was important because it was the first bill designed to improve the performance of all American elementary and secondary schools. It was meant to ensure that no children were trapped in failing schools.
    The act increased accontability, give parents school choice, and give greater flexibility for states, school districts, and schools.

    Individuals with Disabilities Educaiton Improvement Act (IDEIA)
    This was important because this revamp of IDEA allowed districts to use an RTI model to determine if a child has a learning disability. It Increased funds to provide support to students who do not need special education serivces.
    Eliminates short term objectives in an IEP. Ans it raises standards for special education licensure.
