SPED Evaluation

  • Referral

    Referral
Once a child is referred for special education services, the IEP team has within 15 business days of the referral to conduct a meeting. Business days include Mondays thru Friday with the exception of state and federal holidays. Also, the IEP team has within 15 business days of the referral to give the parents a written notice. This first IEP meeting is known as the disposition of referral.
  • Evaluation

    Evaluation
After the referral meeting has been held, then an evaluation will be done on the child to determine whether the child has a disability. If the child has been found to have a disability then they will qualify for an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP).
  • Evaluation Process

    Evaluation Process
Each public agency must conduct a full and individual initial evaluation, in accordance with §§300.305 and 300.306, before the initial provision of special education and related services to a child with a disability under this part. When requesting for an initial evaluation then the parents or a public agency may request an initial evaluation to see if their child has a disability. An initial evaluation must be conducted within 60 days of receiving parental consent.
  • Determination of Eligibility

    Determination of Eligibility
When the results are in, the IEP team will meet to decide whether the child is eligible for Special Education services. In order for a child to be eligible, the child must have a disability and require special education or any needed related services to receive free appropriate and public education (FAPE). Once a child receives special education then he or she must be reevaluated at least once every three years. This will ensure that the IEP team has up to date and current information.
  • Approval of the IEP

    Approval of the IEP
Within 30 days after the child is found eligible for special education then the IEP team meets to develop an individualized education plan for him or her. Once a child has an IEP then it is reviewed and revised at least once a year. The IEP must be in place at the start of each school year. Also, the IEP will never go into effect until it is signed by the parents and the school district representative.
