Opened in 1817 as the Connecticut Asylum for the education of the deaf and dumb. This is the oldest standing permanent school for the deaf in the United States. During this time "dumb" meant unable to speak, so many of the children who were born deaf at this time had no other resource to use for communication therefore they were classified as dumb. -
Perkins Institute for the Blind. It was founded in 1829 and was the first school for the blind in the United States. This school continues to advocate for the proper education of students who are blind, visually impaired.

This case involved a student who was excluded from the classroom setting because he was born with a disability that caused him to have facial abnormalities and drooling. The teacher and students complained that his look nauseated them. This case was brought to the supreme court. -
This council was organized by a group of educators attending the Teachers College. They recognized the importance of having certain standards that played important roles in the specific areas of studies Special Needs Students need. -
Leo Kanner a psychiatrist from John Hopkins published the first systematic description of early infantile autism. He concluded that this was a neurodevelopmental disorder. Kanner insisted that autism was a well-delineated narrow category. -
In 1972 the first center for Independent Living was established in Berkeley, California by Ed Roberts and the Rolling Quads. Since there no housing for disabled students at the time, students with disabilities lived in the Student Health Infirmary. -
This act prohibits discrimination based on a disability in programs or activities receiving federal financial assistance. Including public schools, elementary, secondary and postsecondary. Under Section 504, students with disabilities have rights to reasonable accommodations. -
On November 29th 1975 the EHA guarantied a free appropriate public education to or FAPE to each child with a disability. This is in every state and locality across the country. -
This act amends the education of the Handicapped Act to award the reasonable fees of an attorney along with other expenses. This ensured all children with disabilities the gain the education they deserved and have the right to. -
