Laika the Dog USSR launches Sputnik 2, which carried a dog named Laika. Laika was the first living creature to enter space and was extensively tested and trained for the flight. No re-entry plan was made for her and she died in space. -

Luna 9 & 10
Launch of Luna 9Luna 9 was the very first space craft to land on the moon that was sent by the Russians. The spacecraft landed on oceanus procellarum. Luna 9 was able to take pictures of the surface of the moon but were not able to be realeased early. Luna 10 was the first spacecraft to orbit the moon, also by the Russians. The design of the spacecraft was a lot like Lunar 9 but only took 3 hours to orbit. -

Mission AS-204 Tragedy
Mission AS-204 is struck by tragedy when a flash fire breaks out during a launch pad test, killing three astronauts: Virgil Grissom, who had participated in Mercury and Gemini flights; Edward White, who conducted NASA's first extravehicular activity; and new astronaut Roger Chaffee. The mission, one of NASA's first major setbacks, was later renamed Apollo 1. -

A trip to Mars!
Footage of Mars on the Viking I mission Launch of Viking 1, the first orbiter and lander sent to Mars. Viking 2 would launch a few weeks later. Both landed safely on Mars and for six years sent back the first set of images and data from the Martian surface.
